ORLANDO, Fla. – Duke University women's lacrosse head coach Kerstin Kimel was presented with an Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Service Award Thursday evening at the 2016 Honors Banquet. Kimel was honored along with NCAA Division I Legislation committee co-chair Karin Brower Corbett, head coach at the University of Pennsylvania.
The IWLCA Service Award honors individuals who have committed themselves to the betterment of the IWLCA during the past year.
Kimel and Corbett were recognized for their efforts to slow down early recruiting within the sport.
“The success of formulating this early recruiting proposal and persuading the NCAA DI Council to recommend it for consideration in the '16-'17 legislative cycle is due in large part to the Herculean efforts of Kerstin and Karin,” said IWLCA Legal Counsel Samantha Eckstrand, a former Duke women's lacrosse assistant coach who worked closely with Kimel and Corbett on the proposed legislation. “With their joint laser focus, 'all-in' approach and relentless resolve, they drove this issue to the forefront of the college sports agenda. Now, everyone is talking about early recruiting. Their leadership on this committee has made women's lacrosse a leader nationally. We are grateful for and proud of their service to the IWLCA and the greater lacrosse community.”
In addition to their early recruiting proposals, Kimel and Corbett also worked to submit proposals to amend the “dates of competition” rule and create a universal start date for practice and competition within collegiate women's lacrosse. The proposals will be voted on during the early spring of 2017. The NCAA Division I Legislation committee also put forth a revised recruiting calendar proposal that was adopted as of Aug. 1, 2016.
Kimel was previously honored by the IWLCA in 2015 as the recipient of the Diane Geppi-Aikens Memorial Award, named in honor of the legendary Loyola coach whose courageous battle with cancer inspired the nation.
Kimel has served the game in a variety of ways, including in her current role as co-chair of the NCAA Division I Legislation Committee. She is the former chair of the Division I All-American Selection and Rules, Safety and Game Administration (RSGA) committees and has been a member of the IWLCA Board of Directors, IWLCA Growth committee, IWLCA Recruiting Issues committee, the NCAA Women's Lacrosse committee and the Tewaaraton Selection committee. Kimel also served on the selection committee for the U.S. national teams program and was an assistant coach for the developmental squad.
The only head coach in Duke women's lacrosse history, Kimel has led the program from its inception in 1996, molding the Blue Devils into one of the nation's elite teams. In her 21 seasons at the helm, Kimel has guided Duke to seven national semifinals, four ACC regular season titles, an ACC Tournament championship and 19 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances – the third longest current streak in the country.
A five-time ACC Coach of the Year, Kimel registered her 250th career victory Feb. 22, 2015 to become one of just six active Division I coaches with 250 or more wins.
