DURHAM, N.C. -- Statistics for the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) released Tuesday by the NCAA indicated that 97 percent of freshmen student-athletes receiving scholarship aid or recruited individuals participating in programs that do not offer athletic aid graduated from Duke within six years.
The GSR is based on student-athletes who entered college as freshmen in 2006-2009 and allows for the removal of those individuals from the cohort who left Duke in good academic standing.
A total of 13 Duke teams achieved a 100 percent GSR: men's basketball, women's cross country/track & field, men's fencing, women's fencing, field hockey, men's golf, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, rowing, women's soccer, men's tennis, women's tennis and volleyball.
Duke's remaining programs – baseball (94), women's basketball (89), men's cross country/track & field (91), football (94), women's golf (83), men's soccer (90), men's swimming & diving (96), women's swimming & diving (94) and wrestling (94) – all achieved a GSR of 83 percent of better.
Nationally, Duke was among four Football Bowl Subdivision institutions with an overall GSR total of 97 percent or better, joining Notre Dame (98), Stanford (98) and Northwestern (97). In the ACC, Duke's mark was second behind Notre Dame, followed by Boston College (95), Virginia Tech (92), Wake Forest (92), Clemson (91), Miami (90), Syracuse (90), Georgia Tech (87), Florida State (87), Virginia (87), Pittsburgh (84), Louisville (83), N.C. State (83) and North Carolina (82).
Duke's football program ranks tied for fourth among FBS schools with its 94 percent rate and joins Stanford (99), Northwestern (97), South Carolina (95) and Rice (94) as the only programs with a 94 rate or better. Within the ACC, Duke's 94 percent rate was tops followed by Wake Forest (91), Boston College (90), Virginia Tech (89), Miami (86), Clemson (84), Syracuse (80), Georgia Tech (78), Florida State (77), Virginia (77), Pittsburgh (71), N.C. State (70), Louisville (69) and North Carolina (59).
In men's basketball, Duke tied for the national lead with its 100 percent rate. Duke and Notre Dame both registered perfect scores to lead the ACC followed by Florida State (92), Clemson (91), Miami (91), Georgia Tech (80), Virginia Tech (80), Louisville (77), Pittsburgh (77), N.C. State (71), Virginia (70), Wake Forest (70), Boston College (67), North Carolina (50) and Syracuse (50).
In addition, the Federal Graduation Rates were released on Wednesday. Duke freshmen scholarship athletes that enrolled in 2006-09 posted a four-year class average of 85 percent. The Federal Graduation Rate does not allow for the removal of those individuals from the cohort who left Duke in good academic standing, and only includes scholarship student-athletes.
