LYNCHBURG, Va. – Redshirt junior guard Rebecca Greenwell turned in a career-high scoring performance as the Duke women's basketball team lifted the lid on the 2016-17 campaign with a 98-38 win at Liberty Friday evening.
Greenwell led all players with 28 points, finishing 10-of-21 from the floor, and added six rebounds and five assists. She was joined in posting a career-best showing by redshirt sophomore Lyneé Belton, who turned in a career-high 12 points, and junior Erin Mathias, who had a career-high 10 rebounds.
Following a back-and-forth first quarter, the Blue Devils went ahead for good, beginning the year at 1-0 after the program's first trip to Liberty's Vines Center.
Sophomore guard Kyra Lambert led Duke in the early going, pouring in seven of the squad's first 11 points. The Flames kept pace until the Blue Devils rattled off 10 unanswered points for a 24-18 margin at the end of the first quarter.
Greenwell helped Duke extend its lead, reaching double figures in the second quarter. Senior Kendall Cooper came off the bench to provide a boost, notching eight first-half points and two blocks as the Blue Devils outscored Liberty 24-6 in the second frame. A defensive effort that included 19 points off of turnovers sent Duke into the locker room at the intermission with a 48-24 advantage.
Lexie Brown opened the third quarter by draining her first three-pointer in a Blue Devil uniform. Lambert joined Greenwell and Belton in double figures as Duke stretched its lead to 30 midway through the period.
Though both teams struggled from behind the arc, the Blue Devils continued to exploit their advantage in the paint in the final quarter. The squad closed the contest on a 24-2 run over the last 8:36 to round out the season-opening victory.
Duke finished at 52 percent (36-of-69) from the field and went 21-of-25 at the free throw line while limiting the Flames to just 21 percent shooting (11-of-53) on the night. The Blue Devils led the rebounding margin, 49-32, and totaled 10 blocks and 24 assists.
Ola Makurat and Molly Reagan headlined the Liberty lineup with nine points each.
Lambert (13 points) and Cooper (10) joined Greenwell and Belton in recording double-figuring scoring for Duke.
The 98 points by the Blue Devils is the most by a Duke squad in the season opener since Nov. 13, 2009 at Houston Baptist (104).
