GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Duke men's golf team shot 284 (-4) as a group on Monday to put the finishing touches on its finest performance of the season and cap its fall slate in style, winning the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate at Grandover Resort by four strokes.
The Blue Devils outlasted Iowa State with a total of 834 (-30), marking the second-best 54-hole score in program history in relation to par. Duke shot 267 (-21) in Sunday's second round, shattering the previous program 18-hole records by both score and par.
The victory is Duke's 16th under the direction of head coach Jamie Green, extending his hold on third place on the program's coaching wins chart.
“It's not always easy to play with a lead,” Green said. “When you're the chased instead of the chaser, it can be a little different frame of mind despite how hard you try to prevent that. Our guys did a really good job of having a game plan. They were really consistent with their attention to detail this week. They did a terrific job of playing intelligently and athletically. We're excited to finish the fall season with a win and drive back to Durham with a trophy.”
Sophomore Alex Smalley and freshman Chandler Eaton both tied for fourth on the individual leader board with totals of 208 (-8).
Smalley was the low man for Duke on Monday, shooting two-under 70 to notch his second top-five finish of the season. The Wake Forest, N.C., native finished the round with a strong push, birdying two of his final four holes on the day.
“Alex did a fantastic job of being clear-minded and staying on task,” Green said. “He hit some clutch golf shots down the stretch to get to two-under par. That was a big score for us.”
Eaton's performance was the third top-five showing in his first five collegiate tournaments. The Alpharetta, Ga., native's 208 (-8) effort at Grandover represented the second-best 54-hole output by a freshman in program history in relation to both score and par.
“Chandler was feeling really good and posted some really good numbers,” Green said. “He played really solid golf and we're so proud of him for staying poised and collected down the stretch. We needed his score to win this tournament.”
Junior Adam Wood and senior Max Greyserman both turned in top-20 finishes in Duke's fall finale, sharing 19th place with totals of 212 (-4) that marked 54-hole season bests for both. Wood shot 71 (-1) on Monday on the strength of five birdies, while Greyserman battled his way to a 75 (+3).
Junior Jake Shuman rounded out the Duke lineup in a tie for 23rd place with a total of 213 (-3). He shot 71 (-1) on Monday in a round that saw him record 13 pars.
“Max didn't play the way he's used to from tee to green, but there was no quit in him,” Green said. “My hat goes off to Jake and Adam for their bounce-back rounds today. In order to win golf tournaments, you need some guys to set their jaws and grind out some key pars.”
Senior Alexander Matlari fired a final-round 68 on Monday to grab a spot in the top 10 as an individual, tying for 10th with a total of 210 (-6).
Among the other Duke players competing as individuals, sophomore Shrish Dwivedi tied for 42nd with a total of 217 (+1), junior Ben Silverman tied for 47th with a total of 218 (+2), senior Andrew Bieber tied for 72nd with a total of 229 (+13) and freshman Steven DiLisio placed 83rd with a total of 239 (+23).
With its fall season concluded, Duke will return to action in late February when it heads to Los Cabos, Mexico, for the Quernecia Cabo Collegiate.
