DURHAM, N.C. – Duke's all-time rushing leader
Chris Douglas will represent his alma mater as a member of the 2015 ACC Class of Football Legends. The group of 14 former standouts will be recognized at the ACC Night of Legends sponsored by the Belk Bowl on Friday, Dec. 4, and Saturday, Dec. 5, during ceremonies at Bank of America Stadium for the 11th Annual Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship.
A native of Sherrills Ford, N.C., who currently resides in Plainfield, Ill., Douglas lettered four seasons (2000-01-02-03) as a running back for the Blue Devils and continues to stand as the school's career leader in both rushing yards (3,122) and all-purpose yards (5,753). In addition, he currently ranks third all-time in ACC history in all-purpose yardage, trailing only C.J. Spiller of Clemson (7,588; 2006-09) and Leon Johnson of North Carolina (5,828; 1993-96).
For his career, Douglas rushed 695 times for 3,122 yards and 21 touchdowns while catching 89 passes for an additional 857 yards and five scores. As a senior, he earned first team All-ACC honors after gaining 1,138 yards on the ground including a career-high 218-yard performance in Duke's 41-17 win over Georgia Tech on November 8, 2003.
Douglas ranks tied for third on Duke's all-time chart with 10 career 100-yard rushing games, topping the century mark against Rice (112 yards in 2001 & 110 yards in 2003), Virginia (101 yards in 2001 & 126 yards in 2002), Vanderbilt (169 yards in 2001), Western Carolina (106 yards in 2003), N.C. State (125 in 2003), Tennessee (128 in 2003), Georgia Tech (218 in 2003) and North Carolina (119 in 2003). The six 100-yard games in 2003 equaled the school single-season standard previously set by Steve Jones (1972), Randy Cuthbert (1989) and Alex Wade (2002).
In 2001, Douglas was an honorable mention All-ACC selection after leading the conference in all-purpose yards per game (168.1). Against Florida State on September 1, 2001, he amassed 304 all-purpose yards to post the second highest single-game total in school history and the total currently stands as the 22nd-best single-game total in ACC history.
Following the 2003 campaign, Douglas was honored with the ACC's Jim Tatum Award, an honor presented annually to the league's top football senior scholar-athlete. Also a three-time (2001-02-03) Academic All-ACC choice, Douglas graduated from Duke in 2003 with a degree in computer science.
