
Duke Continues Fall Action with Strong Saturday

CARY, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team turned in a solid Saturday, highlighted by sophomore Nicolas Alvarez advancing to the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) championship with a pair of victories.
In Cary at the James Bonk Invite, the Blue Devils tallied four singles victories. Freshman Vincent Lin turned in the strongest performance in Cary with two wins and a trip to the consolation finals on Sunday.
In Malibu, Calif., at the ITA's prime fall event, Alvarez began the day with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against TCU's Guillermo Nunez. Nunez was ranked No. 19 in the Oracle/ITA preseason poll while Alvarez checks in at No. 7.
Alvarez kept the momentum going in the afternoon with a stirring comeback victory against Texas Tech's 18th-ranked Felipe Soares, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-0. Alvarez will play for the championship Sunday against TCU's Cameron Norrie, who is ranked 15th in the country in the preseason. The 3:30 p.m. ET match will be televised live on the Tennis Channel.
In Cary, Lin turned in a strong day, winning two matches in the black draw to move to the consolation championship on Sunday at 11 a.m. Lin defeated Old Dominion's Jacob Nicolussi, 6-0, 6-2, and then downed Notre Dame's Kenneth Sabacinski, 6-3, 6-4. Lin will face Elon's Mario Paccini for the consolation title Sunday. Also in the black draw, senior Daniel McCall went 1-1, falling to Old Dominion's Michael Weindle in a tough three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4, before defeating Radford's Samuel Taylor, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The blue draw had senior Josh Levine and freshman Jason Lapidus combine to suffer four losses. Levine fell to Auburn's Marko Krickovic, 6-2, 6-2 and then to VCU's Philip Mobius, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Lapidus began the day with a 6-2, 6-2 setback to East Tennessee's Diego Nunez before N.C. State's Shoti Meparidze won 6-0, 7-5. Levine will take on Elon's Robert Lindgren at 11 a.m. Sunday while Lapidus faces N.C. State's Michael Ogden also at 11 a.m.
Duke wrapped up the singles action with freshman Adrian Chamdani and sophomore Andrew DeJoy in the white draw. Chamdani fell 6-3, 6-3 to Wake Forest's Sam Bloom before rebounding with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Notre Dame's Brendon Kempin in the fifth place bracket. Chamdani takes on Auburn's Dante Saleh Sunday at 11 a.m. DeJoy was handed a pair of setbacks on Saturday, losing 6-3, 7-6 (0) to Radford's Michiel Meekers and 6-2, 6-3 to UNC's Chad Hoskins. DeJoy faces Radford's Nikhil Mannepalli at 11 a.m. Sunday.
In doubles Duke suffered a trio of losses. Lin and Chamdani placed for the white draw's championship and were handed an 8-4 setback by UNC's Brett Clark and Robert Kelly, who are ranked No. 18 in the preseason. The blue draw had Levine and McCall suffer a tough 8-4 loss to Wake Forest's Bloom and Anthony Delcore in the consolation finals. In the black draw, Lapidus and DeJoy fell 8-6 to UNC's Hoskins and Stuart DePaolo in the third-place match.
The Duke James Bonk Invite will wrap up Sunday with singles action at 9 a.m.
