DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University women's soccer head coach
Robbie Church announced Tuesday the addition of Brandon Gwin as goalkeeper coach, effective immediately.
“We are really excited for Brandon to join our staff,” commented Church. “Brandon is young, but has a ton of experience with some great programs. The Rice team qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year and has been growing and growing every year. Brandon has been a big part of that growth. We think Brandon can come in and help elevate our goalkeepers. They are on a really good path and appreciate the work
Chris White did with our keepers, but we think Brandon can come in a really help them continue to grow. The goalkeeping position is going to be a very important position for us as we head into the 2015 season.”
Gwin replaces
Chris White, who accepted the head coach position at Chowan University.
“First of all I have to thank Robbie for bringing me on the staff and also for Nicky (Adams) at Rice for the opportunity she gave me there,” said Gwin. “It is an honor and exciting to come to Duke and the ACC. To be able to work with some great goalkeepers here in EJ (Proctor) and Abby (Pyne), which have tremendous abilities and upside. It will be fun to work with them and have hopefully a very successful season here at Duke.”
Gwin is coming off spending the last two years at Rice as the goalkeeper coach along with coaching the defense.
He helped lead the Owls to the 2014 NCAA Tournament, after Rice placed second in the Conference USA regular season, before going on to win the Conference USA Tournament. Gwin trained Amy Czyz, who became the school's all-time career leader for wins (42), saves (299), solo shutouts (28) and minutes (7,332:52). As a team, Rice finished second in the conference in shutouts (11) and was third in both fewest goals allowed (16, in 21 games) and goals-against average (0.73).
In his first season with Rice in 2013, the Owls posted five shutouts and his goalkeepers finished fourth in Conference USA with an average of 5.2 saves per game. In one road contest Czyz recorded 11 saves, a mark that tied for the fourth-largest single-game total in school history. Rice's final save percentage was a steady 75.6 percent.
During his stay at Rice, Gwin also served as the goalkeeper coach with the Houston Dynamo US Soccer Development Academy. He is a member of both the Region III ODP Goalkeeping Staff and a member of the Super-Y ODP National Staff. Gwin holds a USSF National "B" License, NSCAA National Diploma and an NSCAA Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma.
In 2012, Gwin served as the goalkeepers coach for a South Alabama squad that posted eight wins and three ties while qualifying for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Jaguar keepers registered a total of eight shutouts and combined for 136 saves in 21 games. South Alabama was third in the conference in shutouts and finished fourth in saves.
Prior to South Alabama Gwin spent the previous two seasons with Southeastern Conference power LSU. At LSU he assisted with the development of a talented pool of Tiger goalkeepers that included Megan Kinneman, who recorded a new LSU single-season goals-against average (0.66) to earn SEC All-Freshman-Team honors in 2010. Under Gwin's direction, Kinneman posted six shutouts in 14 starts that season, and then-junior Mo Isom added three more to bring the Tigers' clean-sheet total to nine out of 20 total matches.
After graduating from Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, La., in 2006, Gwin spent two seasons in the net for the Premier Development League's Baton Rouge Capitals during 2007 and 2008. Before joining the LSU staff, Gwin spent five seasons as a varsity, junior varsity and goalkeepers coach at Catholic High, while also serving a four-year stint as a goalkeeper coach with the Baton Rouge Soccer Association.
Gwin earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from LSU in 2010.
