DURHAM, N.C. - Duke freshman defensive tackle Zach Morris will miss the 2015 season after suffering a torn right anterior cruciate ligament.
Surgery was performed by Dr. Claude T. Moorman III, Duke's head team physician and the director of Duke Sports Medicine, on June 23.
Morris, a 6-3, 295-pound native of Ringgold, Ga., was a four-year letterwinner at Ringgold High School for coach Robert Akins. He was rated as the No. 63 defensive end in the country by ESPN.com and was listed at No. 54 on the Scout.com strongside defensive end chart.
As a senior, Morris earned Region 6-AAA Defensive Player of the Year honors as voted on by the league's coaches after guiding the Tigers to an 8-3 overall record and a berth in the Georgia High School Association Class AAA playoffs. He tallied 54 tackles with 11.0 hits for lost yardage and 6.0 sacks en route to first team all-state honors from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution during his final campaign.
The Blue Devils bring back six returning starters on offense and six on defense from last season's squad, which qualified for a bowl for the third straight season.
Duke opens the 2015 campaign at Tulane on Thursday, September 3. To order Duke season tickets, call (919) 681-BLUE or visit www.GoDuke.com/footballtix.
