MORRISTOWN, N.J. -- Duke rising junior Max Greyserman carded a final round six-under 64 to overcome a six-shot deficit to win the 114th New Jersey State Golf Association Amateur Championship. Greyserman fired rounds of 69-74-70-64 for a three-under 277 at the par 70, 6,448-yard Morris County Golf Club.
The Short Hills, N.J., native got of to a slow start with a bogey on No. 1 in the final round. He quickly responded to birdie the next two holes and added birdies on No. 5 and No. 6 to get to three-under on the day and even-par for the tournament. Greyserman dropped a stroke on No. 9 to make the turn at two-under.
Greyserman opened the back nine with birdies on No. 10 and No. 11 and added another birdie on the par 4 14th hole to continue his climb up the leaderboard. He suffered his only bogey of the back nine on No. 16 but for the third time in the round followed a bogey with back-to-back birdies. Trailing third round leader John Voetsch by one shot heading into No. 17, Greyserman knocked his tee shot on the par 3 12 feet to the right of the hole and made the birdie putt to move into a tie for first.
On the par 4 18th hole, Greyserman drained a clutch 25-foot birdie putt to take his first lead of the tournament. Voetsch, playing two groups behind Greyserman, missed a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 18 that would have forced a playoff. The Vanderbilt rising senior parred his final five holes to close the round but it was not enough to hold off Greyserman.
"I was trying to keep my cool, but I did get a little nervous on 18," said Greyserman. "My putt earlier in the day at 18 was from five feet and I missed it. The 25-footer was a little left to right and uphill and about one-and-a-half cups to the left. I felt like I knew I had to make it, but as I saw it rolling I thought it might be short."
Greyserman, who gave a strong fist pump when the putt on 18 dropped, registered nine birdies in the fourth round and finished the tournament with 20 birdies. His final round total was just the third 64 in New Jersey State Amateur history and marked the first one on the final day of competition.
Late round heriocs are becoming common for Greyserman in New Jersey amateur competitions. Last July, he overcame a two-shot deficit with nine holes remaining to defeat defending champion Frank Esposito, Jr. to win the State Open. Greyserman is the first to hold both the Open and Amateur titles at the same time since Charles Whitehead in 1942.
"I'm really happy and impressed with the way I played in the final round," said Greyserman. "To hold both simultaneously means a lot to me. This one has really been a goal of mine ever since I won the New Jersey Open."
