SCOTLAND -- Duke rising junior Alexander Matlari fired rounds of 76 and 67 to advance to match play at the 120th Amateur Championship. Matlari faces Mateusz Gradecki of Poland in the opening round of match play Wednesday, June 17.
Matlari reached match play on the number at one-over. The Leimen, Germany native stumbled down the stretch en route to a four-over 76 in his opening round at Carnoustie. He was even-par heading into No. 17 before closing bogey, triple-bogey.
Matlari rebounded in the second round at the par 70 Panmore Golf Course Tuesday. He opened with a birdie on No. 1 and closed the front nine at four-under following birdies on No. 7, No. 8 and No. 9. Matlari suffered a double-bogey on No. 10 but recovered with birdies on No. 13 and No. 14. A bogey on the final hole dropped him back to three-under 67 for the round but kept him inside the top 64 to advance to match play.
