DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University freshman attackman Justin Guterding was selected as the 2015 ACC Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches, as announced by the conference office Tuesday. Guterding is the fifth Blue Devil to win the award.
Guterding leads the Duke offense with a league-best 46 goals and ranks second on the team with 62 points. A starter in all 16 games at attack, he has registered at least one point in all 16 outings and has at least a goal in 15 of those. He currently ranks 13th on the Duke single-season records list for goals and is 11 shy of matching Zack Greer's freshman record of 57 set in 2005. His 62 points are 10 shy of matching Greer's points record of 72.
Duke's most recent rookie of the year was Michael Manley in 2008. Guterding joins Manley, Zack Greer, Matt Danowski and Scott Diggs as Blue Devil recipients of the honor.
A native of Garden City, N.Y., Guterding made a big splash out of the gate for the Blue Devils in scoring 10 goals in his first two games. He owns three six-goal performances for the year and posted a career-high nine points in the Blue Devils' victory over Harvard in February. He recently passed assistant coach Matt Danowski's 44 goals in 2007 and is four off of tying Danowski's career-best of 50 from 2005.
Guterding currently ranks third in the ACC and 14th nationally in goals per game, while his 3.88 points per game are ninth and 26th, respectively. He most recently had six points (5g, 1a) in the Blue Devils' run in the ACC Tournament. Guterding leads the team with nine hat tricks on the year.
Duke, ranked fourth in the latest coaches poll, is 11-5 overall and finishes its regular season slate Sunday, May 3 against Boston University. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m., on the West Campus Turf Fields due to a schedule conflict. The NCAA Tournament selection show is set to air Sunday, May 3 at 9 p.m., on ESPNU.
