GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following one of the best regular seasons in program history, the Duke men's tennis team had four players earn All-ACC honors in a vote of the league's coaches, according to an announcement by the conference office Monday. Freshman Nicolas Alvarez was a first team selection while seniors Jason Tahir and Raphael Hemmeler were second team honorees and junior Bruno Semenzato was a third team pick.
The Blue Devils were tied with North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech for the most selections with four each. The all-league honor is the first in Alvarez's career and the second for Tahir, Hemmeler and Semenzato.
Alvarez has served as Duke's No. 1 singles player for the majority of the season, going 29-9 overall with an 11-9 mark against nationally ranked opponents. His 29 wins are one away from entering the Duke top-10 chart for wins by a freshman while the 11 victories against ranked foes are the most by a Blue Devil since Henrique Cunha had 17 in 2013. The Lima, Peru, native has been ranked in the top 18 for the entire dual match season and climbed as high as No. 8 in the ITA rankings, the highest for a Duke player since Cunha stood No. 6 the week of April 23, 2013. In the fall, Alvarez was one of only 32 players to qualify for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship, but was forced to withdraw due to illness. Also a standout in doubles, Alvarez has played in the top spot all season, pairing with Hemmeler and Tahir. Alvarez and Hemmeler are 16-8 overall and have captured five of Duke's seven doubles victories against ranked foes.
Hemmeler is one of five players in program history to record 100 career wins in both singles and doubles. He will leave Duke ranked in the top four in career singles and doubles victories. This season, he owns a Duke-best 34 victories and has gone 20-5 in dual matches with a 9-3 mark in ACC play while playing primarily in the No. 3 slot. At one point in ACC singles play, the Zurich, Switzerland, product owned a nine-match winning streak, tied for the longest by a Duke player in program history. Hemmeler, an ACC third team selection last season, enters the NCAA Championship tied for second on the squad with seven wins against nationally ranked foes, including a straight set victory against No. 10 Thai-Son Kwiatkowski of Virginia for the highest-ranked win of Hemmeler's career. Hemmeler climbed as high as No. 59 in the ITA singles rankings this spring. In doubles, Hemmeler has played with Alvarez, junior Josh Levine, junior Daniel McCall and sophomore TJ Pura. Hemmeler is a combined 27-11 in doubles with an 8-7 mark at No. 1 and a 6-5 record against nationally ranked duos.
Tahir has been Duke's primary No. 2 player for the majority of the spring. A first team all-ACC selection in 2014, Tahir owns a 24-17 record this spring and is tied for second on the team with seven victories against nationally ranked foes. He has been within the top 52 of the ITA rankings for the entire fall and spring, spending the majority of the time within the top 36. In the fall, Tahir became just the fourth Blue Devil since 2003 to reach the Round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Indoor National Championship after earning a wild card entry to the event. Earlier this spring, he reached 100 career singles victories, the 15th player in program history to reach the mark. The Rochester, N.Y., native has excelled in doubles with Levine, posting an 18-5 record and 6-1 mark in ACC play. The duo has won 10 of its last 11 matches and is 15-5 in dual action.
Semenzato has turned in a strong season while playing primarily at No. 4 singles. He owns a 29-12 record, including a 15-7 mark in dual matches with a 10-4 ledger on court four. A 2014 third team all-ACC honoree, Semenzato finished this spring with an 8-4 record against ACC foes with three victories in three sets. The Sao Paulo, Brazil, product owns a team fourth-best two victories against ranked opponents. In doubles, he has paired with redshirt senior Chris Mengel and Pura this spring in the No. 2 and 3 spots. Semenzato is a combined 23-11 in doubles this year with a 15-8 mark in dual matches. He has gone 5-1 in the No. 2 doubles position.
The top individual winners in the league this year were Wake Forest's Noah Rubin, who received the ACC's Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year accolades, and Virginia Tech's Jim Thompson, who was named the conference's Coach of the Year.
