DURHAM, N.C.- The Duke women's soccer team held its annual team banquet Sunday evening to officially wrap up the 2014 campaign, which saw the Blue Devils register eight victories under the direction of head coach
Robbie Church.
A total of six awards were given out on the evening including Newcomer of the Year, Most Inspirational Player, Coaches Award, Most Outstanding Offensive Player, Most Outstanding Defensive Player and Most Valuable Player. All awards except for the Coaches Award were voted on by the student-athletes.
Sophomore
Christina Gibbons was presented with the Most Valuable Player award, after starting 15-of-16 matches on the season. An All-ACC second team selection, Gibbons saw action in both the midfield and defense slots. Gibbons, who is a native of Raleigh, N.C., scored three goals, added three assists and had a total of nine points on the season. She netted the game-winning goal at Pittsburgh in a 3-0 victory.
Junior
Toni Payne was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player, after leading the Blue Devils in scoring with seven goals and five assists for 19 points. Payne, who hails from Birmingham, Ala., collected game-winning goals against UAB and a golden-goal against Boston College for a 2-1 victory. She led Duke with 52 shots on the season and her 1,437 minutes was the third-most on the team. Payne received Second Team All-ACC honors for her efforts.
Earning both the Most Outstanding Defensive Player and Newcomer of the Year accolades was rookie
Schuyler DeBree. A product of Fair Haven, N.J., DeBree started all 18 matches on the defensive end for the Blue Devils in 2014. She collected two assists and helped Duke register six shutouts as a team.
After missing most of her junior campaign with a hip injury,
Tabria Williford was expected to be a starter on defense in 2014, but the senior suffered the same injury in preseason and was forced to miss the 2014 campaign. Williford, who is from Boerne, Texas, earned the Most Inspirational Player award.
Both
Katie Trees and
Audrey Gibson were presented with the Coaches Award as they completed their final season with the Blue Devils. Trees, a native of San Diego, Calif., appeared in 11 matches in her final year, while dealing with injuries. Gibson, who is from San Francisco, Calif., saw action in 13 matches in 2014.
As a team, Duke posted an 8-9-1 overall record, while featuring five freshman starters for most of the season. The Blue Devils will return nine starters and 19 letterwinners in 2015, while welcoming one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.
