HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Duke University freshman
Leona Maguire carded a career-best six-under-par, 65, Saturday to jump into the individual lead, while the sixth-ranked Blue Devils moved into a one-stroke lead through 36 holes at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the 6,142-yard, par 71 Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Maguire, who is a native of Cavan, Ireland, rolled in a career-high seven birdies on the day and now owns a two-day ledger of four-under 138 with rounds of 73 and 65. She kicked off her day with a par and then registered a birdie on the 156-yard, par three second hole. Maguire dropped a shot on No. 3, but went on to make six birdies over her final 15 holes to shoot six-under-par. She had four birdies on the front nine and three on the back.
With 18 holes remaining, Maguire will be looking to claim her first collegiate tournament title, which would mark the second straight Duke freshman to win the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
Yu Liu took home the title a year ago. Maguire's round of 65 was also a tournament record, breaking the previous low of 67, which had been posted four times.
Only three golfers head into the final round under par led by Maguire at four-under, 138. Madelene Sagstrom of LSU (-3, 139) and first round leader Gabriella Then of Southern California (-1, 141) are second and third, respectively.
Duke (576) holds a one stroke lead over LSU (577), while Southern California (581), Mississippi State (591), South Carolina (592), Tennessee (594), Wake Forest (596), Furman (597), Arkansas (599) and Alabama (604) rounded out the top 10.
Sophomore
Sandy Choi carded a one-under-par, 70, in the second round and is fifth overall with a two-over-par, 144. Choi, who hails from Seoul, South Korea, opened her day with a bogey on No. 1 but then collected birdies on No. 5, No. 6 and No. 8 to move to two-under-par. On the back nine, Choi added a bogey on the 137-yard, par three No. 13, birdie on No. 16 and bogey on No. 18 to close the day with a 70. She tied a season best with 16 greens, hit 13 fairways and had 32 putts on the day.
With rounds of 74 and 72 for a total of 146, junior
Celine Boutier is tied ninth overall at four-over-par. Boutier, who is from Montrouge, France, totaled 10 straight pars to start her round. She had a bogey on No. 11, but came back to roll in a birdie on the 501-yard, par five 15th to get back to even par. Boutier suffered a bogey on No. 16 for the second consecutive day to finish the day. She hit 14 greens, 11 fairways and had 32 putts in her round.
Freshman
Gurbani Singh signed for a five-over, 76, Saturday and now sits tied 21st overall with a 148. After a double-bogey start on No. 1, Singh came back to collect her first of two birdies on No. 3. With bogeys on No. 7 and No. 8, she finished the front nine with her second birdie as she made the turn at two-over-par. Singh shot three-over-par on her final nine holes to finish with a 76.
Freshman
Lisa Maguire turned in her second straight round of 81 and is tied 76th overall.
Duke will tee off in Sunday's final round at 9:30 a.m., along with LSU and Southern California. The Blue Devils are in search of their second consecutive Darius Rucker Team title as Duke shot a 54-hole ledger of 862.
