HILTON HEAD, S.C. – For the second straight season, the Duke women's golf team took home the team and individual titles at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Sunday at the 6,142-yard, par 71 Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Freshman Leona Maguire won the individual title on a one-hole playoff, while the sixth-ranked Blue Devils shot a two-under, 282, to finish with a nine stroke victory.
As a team, Duke shot a tournament-record 282 in the final round to close the weekend with a 54-hole tournament record, 858. It was four strokes better than the Blue Devils' ledger from a year ago. Rounding out the top 10 were LSU (867), Southern California (867), Tennessee (889), South Carolina (890), Wake Forest (890), Mississippi State (892), Virginia (900), Arkansas (901) and Furman (902).
“We got important contribution from everyone this weekend,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “I'm real proud of all three freshmen, particularly. Leona's back-to-back birdies on 18, for the individual win, were outstanding. One of the most impressive things I've seen as a coach.”
It is the second team title this season as Duke registered a win in Chapel Hill, N.C., at the Tar Heel Invitational in the fall. The victory is the 121st of Blue Devil head coach Dan Brooks' career, which continues to be the most wins in Division I women's golf history.
“It is great,” Maguire commented about getting the victory. “I was pretty close in the fall to getting a win and to especially do it the way I did it in a playoff, it was really nice.
Maguire, who held a one-stroke lead heading into the final round Sunday, was one-over-par through 12 holes in the final round to fall behind LSU's Madeline Sagstrom by two strokes. A product of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire rolled in her third birdie of the day on No. 14 to cut the lead to one, but Sagstrom netted a birdie on No. 15 to go back up by two shots. Maguire collected a birdie on No. 16 and went into the final hole needing a birdie to send the individual title into a playoff.
She hit her five-wood from 202 yards to within 12 feet and drained a birdie to send the action to extra holes. The two golfers went back to the No. 18 tee box and Maguire hit an excellent tee shot. She then knocked her 4-iron from 167-yards to 12 feet on the green. Maguire sank the putt to claim her first collegiate title. She had 32 putts on the day, while hitting 16 greens and 13 fairways.
“I knew Madeline had been playing pretty solid all day and she hadn't made any mistakes,” said Maguire. “The 18th was playing pretty tough today into the wind and I knew I needed to make a birdie to force a playoff.”
Sophomore Sandy Choi collected her second top five finish of the season as she placed third overall with a three-day ledger of 214. Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, closed the tournament with a one-under-par, 70, as she totaled two birdies, one bogey and 15 pars. She kicked off her day with six straight pars and then collected a birdie on the 385-yard, par four seventh hole. After a bogey on No. 11, Choi turned in five consecutive pars before carding her second birdie at the 172-yard, par three 17th. She had a par to close the day. Choi hit 13 fairways, 14 greens and had 31 putts during the round.
With a collegiate best tied seventh placement Sunday by Gurbani Singh, she notched her first top 10 finish at Duke out of four tournaments. A native of New Delhi, India, Singh carded a career-low, two-under-par, 69, Sunday paced by a career-best five birdies. With birdies on No. 1 and No. 8, Singh held a 2-under ledger through eight holes. A bogey on No. 9 dropped her back to 1-under, but she went on to birdie three out of the next four holes to get to 4-under-par for the day. Singh suffered bogeys on No. 14 and No. 16 to close the afternoon with a 69. In the final round, she hit 12 greens, eight fairways and rolled in a career-best 25 putts.
Junior Celine Boutier concluded the weekend with a 15th place finish with rounds of 74, 72 and 74 for a total of 220. Boutier, who is from Montrouge, France, registered 10 straight pars to open the day before going bogey, double-bogey and birdie the next three holes to drop to two-over. She finished with four pars and a bogey on No. 17.
After struggling the first two days, freshman Lisa Maguire settled down and closed with a solid three-over-par, 74, Sunday. Maguire, a product of Cavan, Ireland, had six straight pars to kick off her day, before suffering bogeys on three out of her next four holes. She had six consecutive pars and then totaled her second birdie of the tournament on No. 17. Maguire had a bogey on No. 18 to finish the day.
Duke will next compete in the Liz Murphey Collegiate March 27-29 in Athens, Ga.
Notes:
• Leona Maguire is the second straight Duke freshman to win the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate as Yu Liu won a year ago.
• Two Duke golfers have won a tournament this season as Sandy Choi took home the Cougar Classic title in the fall.
