HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The sixth-ranked Duke women's golf team opened its second spring tournament Friday at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate with a nine-over-par, 293, and sits tied third overall at the 6,142-yard, par 71 Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Southern California turned in a first round 285 in the first round and leads by six strokes over LSU (291), while Arkansas (293), Duke (293), North Carolina (293), Auburn (298), Arizona State (298), South Carolina (299), Furman (300), Tennessee (300) and Mississippi State (300) round out the top 11 teams.
Duke freshman
Gurbani Singh registered a one-over-par, 72, on day one to pace the Blue Devils and is tied 10th overall. Singh, who hails of New Delhi, India, carded three birdies over her first eight holes to move to two-under-par. A bogey and double-bogey over her next two holes dropped her to one-over-par through 11 holes. Singh rolled in a birdie on the 137-yard, par three 13th to get back to even par, before closing with a bogey on No. 17 to finish with a 72.
Gabriella Then of Southern California took the individual lead Friday with a two-under-par, 69.
Freshman
Leona Maguire, the No. 1 ranked golfer in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, carded three birdies on the day on her way to finishing with a two-over-par, 73. A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire held an even-par ledger through 15 holes, but suffered bogeys on No. 16 and No. 18 to close the round.
Both
Celine Boutier and
Sandy Choi turned in rounds of 74 Friday and are tied 22nd overall. Boutier, who is from Montrouge, France, could not get a putt to drop as she had one birdie on the day at the 346-yard, par four 11th. A product of Seoul, South Korea, Choi had 33 putts to go along with 13 fairways and 13 greens in regulation Friday. She rolled in her lone birdie on the fourth hole and was even through 10 holes. Choi lipped out a par short par putt on No. 11 and suffered three straight bogeys to finish with a 74.
Freshman
Lisa Maguire had an 81 in round one and is tied 76th overall. Senior
Irene Jung was supposed to play as an individual, but injured her shoulder and had to withdraw.
Duke will tee off in the second round beginning at 9:20 a.m., along with Auburn and North Carolina.
