DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior attacker Kerrin Maurer won a career-high nine draw controls and joined teammates Brigid Smith, Kitty Morrissey, Maddie Crutchfield and Katie Trees in scoring two goals each as fifth-ranked Duke downed Davidson 13-6 Tuesday evening at the Wildcats' Richardson Stadium. The Blue Devils moved to 11-1 on the season with the non-conference victory.
Duke kicked off the action with a pair of assisted goals in the first minute as freshman Kyra Harney found a wide open Maurer at the front of the cage and Smith dished to Trees for a score. The Blue Devils also dominated the draw from the outset, winning five of the first six in the circle to fuel an early 5-1 scoring run.
Caused turnovers by sophomore defenders Isabelle Montagne and Maura Schwitter later in the period set up tallies by Crutchfield and Smith. Morrissey recorded the first goal of her career in between those scores as Duke extended its lead to 8-1 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the half.
After Trees struck for a second time, Davidson snapped a 24-minute scoring drought with a goal by Emma Sissman at the 1:23 mark. However, Maurer wrapped around the post with just one second left on the clock to put the score at 10-2 in the Blue Devils' favor at the half.
Duke outshot the Wildcats 20-4 in the first 30 minutes and held a 10-2 advantage the draw with Maurer winning seven.
Davidson's Emily Rademacher opened the second half by converting from the eight-meter. Junior midfielder Maddy Acton and Crutchfield each added free position goals of their own a few minutes later to give the Blue Devils their largest lead at 12-3.
Morrissey earned a career-high with her second marker with 11:46 to play but the Wildcats put together a three-goal burst to narrow the margin to 13-6.
Goalkeepers Angel Thompson and Oralee Hespenheide came on in the latter part of the half to help preserve the victory.
Duryea registered two saves in the win and along with the defense, guided Duke to 16-of-17 on the evening in clear attempts. The Blue Devils led in shots, 33-10, and won the ground ball battle, 20-16. Maurer's nine draws helped Duke take the category, 15-5.
In addition, Duryea and Schwitter were credited with two caused turnovers each.
Rademacher finished with three goals and four points for Davidson while the Wildcats' goalkeeper, Katy Boyle, totaled 12 saves in the net.
Up next, the Blue Devils resume ACC competition Saturday, April 4 in a 1 p.m. contest at No. 3 Boston College.
