ATHENS, Ga. – Competing at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, hosted by the University of Georgia, the No. 3 Duke women's golf team capped the second round of the tournament with one win and one loss in match play. The Blue Devils downed No. 30 Baylor, 3-2, before falling to No. 2 Southern California, 4-1, in the semifinals at the 6,401-yard, par 72 University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
In the first match of the day, the fourth-seeded Blue Devils defeated fifth-seeded Baylor, 3-2. Starting on the back nine, Duke notched wins from
Gurbani Singh,
Leona Maguire and
Celine Boutier to pick up the victory.
Singh finished 5-up over Giovana Maymon after 13 holes. Trailing 1-down through the first four holes, Singh finished with a par and birdie on holes 14 and 15, respectively, to take the 1-up lead. The freshman out of New Delhi, India, then birdied 17 to extend her advantage to 2-up before moving to the front nine and winning holes two, three and four to clinch the win.
Leona Maguire, facing Lauren Whyte, claimed the first two holes and never surrendered the lead. The two traded wins on holes 14 and 15 before Maguire took the next four to build the lead to 6-up. Whyte notched a par on hole two to cut the lead to five before Maguire ended the match 5&4 on hole six.
Boutier secured Duke's third point of the match, defeating Dylan Kim, 3&2. Similar to Maguire, Boutier got out to an early lead, taking the first two holes and leading 3-up after hole 15. Kim staged a comeback by notching birdies on holes 17 and 18 and cutting the advantage to 1-up, but Boutier bounced back with a pair of birdies of her own on holes one and two to reestablish her 3-up lead. The two played even the next five holes before ending play.
In the other two matchups,
Sandy Choi fell 5&4 to Haley Davis, while
Lisa Maguire dropped a close one to Laura Londardi, 1-down. Playing 14 holes, Choi held a 1-up lead through the first three holes before Davis won six of the final 11 holes.
Duke dropped its second match play contest to the eighth-seeded Trojans, 4-1. Boutier picked up the lone win for the Blue Devils, finishing 1-up against Gabriella Then. Starting on the front nine, the junior from Montrouge, France, took hole one before Then won holes five through eight to lead by four. Boutier found her rhythm on the back nine, winning holes 11, 12, 13, 15 and 16 to take a 1-up lead.
USC picked up its first point with Karen Chung downing
Lisa Maguire, 2-up. Maguire grabbed the first lead with a birdie on hole two, but Chung won holes three and four to move ahead for good. Trailing 3-down, the Cavan, Ireland, native birdied holes 16 and 17 to cut the gap to one, but Chung won the final hole to finish 2-up.
Singh also nabbed an early lead over her opponent, but ultimately fell, 5&4, to Amy Lee in 14 holes. Singh took the third hole for the 1-up advantage, but Lee gained the lead with wins on holes five and seven. Lee secured holes 11 through 14 to claim the point for the Trojans.
Annie Park locked up the team victory for USC with a 2&1 win over Choi in 17 holes. Park never led by more than two, with Choi bringing the score to a tie on holes two, nine and 12.
In the final match, Kyung Kim won four of 18 holes against
Leona Maguire to down the Duke freshman, 2-up. After Maguire took holes two and nine to cut Kim's lead to one, Kim won hole 10 to push her lead back to two. Maguire played Kim even through the final eight holes to finish 2&1.
