ATHENS, Ga. – The third-ranked Duke women's golf team closed the Liz Murphey Collegiate with a third place finish as the Blue Devils downed Northwestern, 4-1, in match play Sunday at the 6,401-yard, par 72 University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
The Blue Devils went 2-1 in match play over the last two days of action as Duke downed Baylor (3-2) and lost to Southern California (4-1).
“I was happy with all three of our matches,” said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. “We played tough against Southern California, even though we lost. We were coming back at the end.”
Duke sophomore
Sandy Choi got the Blue Devils on the board first as she cruised to a 6&5 victory over Kaitlin Park. Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, won the first hole and never looked back as she totaled two birdies on the day.
Blue Devil freshman
Gurbani Singh gave Duke another win with a 3&2 win over Northwestern's Suchaya Tangkamolprasent. Singh, who hails from New Delhi, India, went ahead 1-up with a pare on the first hole, but Tangkamolprasent responded by winning the next three holes to take a 2-up advantage. A par on the sixth and a birdie on No. 8 by Singh evened the match at all square and Singh would never trail again. She collected wins on No. 10, No. 11, No. 12 and No. 13 to go ahead 4-up and closed the match with a par on the 16th.
Duke freshman
Leona Maguire gave the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead as she took down Kacie Komoto, 3&2. Maguire, who is the No. 1 ranked golfer in the nation from Cavan, Ireland, dropped the first hole with a bogey, but came back to get the match all square with a par on the next hole. She would not trail the rest of the match as Maguire went ahead, 2-up, with back-to-back birdies on No. 9 and No. 10. Maguire suffered a bogey on the 12th hole to fall back to 1-up, but a par put the ledger back to 2-up through 13 holes. She had another par on the 15th to get the score, 3-up, and closed the match with another par on the 16th.
Northwestern got on the board with a win from Hannah Kim as she knocked off Duke freshman
Lisa Maguire, 1-up. Maguire led most of the first 10 holes, 1-up, but fell behind for the first time all match with a bogey on No. 13. She totaled a par on the 14th to get the match back to all square, but another bogey on the 15th gave the lead back to Kim. Both golfers totaled pars the final three holes to close the match with a 1-up win by Kim.
Duke junior
Celine Boutier finished the weekend with a 3-0 ledger in match play as she netted a 3-up win through 15 hole win over Hana Lee. Boutier, who is a product of Montrouge, France, never trailed as she took a 1-up lead on hole one with a par and was ahead by 4-up through 11 holes, before closing out the match with two straight pars on the 14th and 15th holes.
The Blue Devils will next compete in the PING/ASU Invitational April 10-12 in Tempe, Ariz.
