DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior Kathleen Lyons to learn more about the Round Rock, Texas, native.
GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite place to compete since you've been at Duke?
Kathleen Lyons: I would say probably Oregon last year because that was a place that I've never been to before and it was cool that rowing took me there and it was an extremely beautiful place.
GoDuke.com: What's a road trip memory that you think will stick with you?
KL: Again, I would say probably going to Oregon last year. It was a really memorable trip for me. That was the one competition on the West Coast where the travel squad would go. Last year as a junior was the first time I was on that team and there were just some fun memories from that trip.
GoDuke.com: What's a lesson that you've taken away from competing that will help you later in life?
KL: I can take a lot more adversity than I thought I was capable of. It's kind of crazy because I actually started rowing here; I came as a walk-on so I never imagined that my college experience would turn out quite the way it has, but it's been great.
GoDuke.com: What does it mean to you to be able to represent Duke?
KL: This was basically my dream school growing up, but I don't think I ever imagined that I would come here and actually represent it as an athlete as well as a student, and it really means a lot to me to be a part of that.
GoDuke.com: What do you think you will miss most about Duke?
KL: I'll really miss the people on the team. These are the people I've spent most of these three years with. I'm really close to people in my class, but I'm also really close to people under my class who are going to be seniors next year.
GoDuke.com: Do you have a pre-meet routine or superstition?
KL: I like to have time off by myself, and getting that time alone before I go into race mode is important to me. The other thing is when we are shoving off the dock to go race, for some reason I have to be serious about it. One of my coaches is always trying to get everybody to cheer and be peppy and smile when we're shoving off but I'm just kind of serious. It's kind of a funny thing, but that's just kind of what I do. I just have to have a moment right as we are going out.
