DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior Colin Colter to learn more about the Carrollton, Texas, native.
GoDuke.com: What's been your favorite place to compete with fencing?
Colin Colter: We go to Penn and Temple multiple times, but my favorite place is definitely Duke. (Head coach) Alex (Beguinet) and the staff here put together one of the best meets in the whole country, in terms of organization, cleanliness, everything's on time, everything's labeled and everyone knows where to go. And it's a spirited tournament. Everyone shows up and is part of it. As far as feeling like you're part of the Duke family, you're not going to get anything better than that.
GoDuke.com: What is a life lesson that fencing has taught you?
CC: It's always your fault, whatever happens. You can blame the refs, you can blame your opponent and you can blame your coach, but at the end of the day, it's your fault. If you get hit, you should have parried. If you fell short, you should have corrected your distance. At the end of the day, everything is your responsibility.
GoDuke.com: What does representing Duke mean to you?
CC: It means you're a part of something that is a lot bigger than you. Whatever you want to think matters, in terms of something as small as a practice or something as large as your aspirations in the sport, what matters now, these four years and your responsibilities to the coaches, is that you represent something bigger than simply yourself. Fencing is a very individualistic sport. I think a lot of kids come in having trouble working in a team atmosphere, and that changes very quickly.
GoDuke.com: What will you miss most once your time at Duke is over?
CC: I'll miss the team and having that consistency. It's an easy three or four hours of structure in your life that you don't have to determine. You can just go with the flow and put yourself into it without thinking. I'm also going to miss the free laundry, that's for sure.
GoDuke.com: What's your favorite memory of Coach Beguinet?
CC: He renovated a military jeep a long time ago that is his pride and joy. My freshman year, when I was home over Christmas break, I was at a flea market with my mom and saw this old military truck and took a photo of it and sent it to him and told him I bought him a truck. Ever since then, he has been harassing me about when he is going to get that truck. I'm never going to forget that.
