PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The fourth-ranked Duke women's golf team opened the spring campaign Sunday in the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Tournament with a five-over-par, 289, at the 6,017-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif.
Baylor fired the only under-par round Sunday and holds a four-shot lead, after turning in a three-under-par, 281. Arizona State (285), Southern California (287), Duke (289), Florida (291), Oklahoma State (292), Arizona (296), Wake Forest (296), Alabama (297), UCLA (297) and Washington (297) rounded out the top 11 teams.
The Blue Devils were paced in round one by freshman
Leona Maguire, who carded a one-under-par, 70, and will enter round two tied seventh overall. She kicked off her day by totaling a par and bogey, respectively, in the first two holes. Maguire, a native of Cavan, Ireland, fired four straight pars, before carding four birdies over a five-hole stretch to move to three-under-par through 11 holes. She suffered bogeys on back-to-back holes at No. 15 and No. 16 to fall back to one-under-par, where she finished the day.
In 13 rounds at Duke, Maguire has now collected 12 even-or-under par scores. She totaled 14 greens, 12 fairways and had 31 putts.
Taking the individual lead after day one was a group of four golfers at three-under-par – Amy Lee (Southern California), Ying Luo (Washington), Laura Lonardi (Baylor) and Bronte Law (UCLA).
Sophomore
Sandy Choi posted an even-par, 71, and is tied 10th overall. Choi, who hails from Seoul, South Korea, kicked off her spring with three straight pars and a bogey on No. 4. She then collected her second collegiate eagle on the 319-yard, par four sixth hole to move to one-under. Choi totaled the eagle using her five-iron from 136-yards uphill.
Choi suffered a double-bogey on No. 8 to move back to one-over-par and then collected her first birdie on the 263-yard, par four 12th hole to move to even. Over the final six holes, she had four pars, one birdie and one bogey. For the day, she hit 14 fairways, 12 greens and had 27 putts.
Both
Celine Boutier and
Gurbani Singh each registered three-over-par rounds of 74 Sunday. Boutier, who is from Montrouge, France, had four birdies on the day. A product of New Delhi, India, Singh played her final 12 holes at even par with 10 pars, one birdie and one bogey.
Lisa Maguire struggled in round one with a 79, while
Yi Xiao, who is playing as an individual, also had a 79 to tie for 75th.
Duke will tee off in the second round beginning at 1:12 p.m. (ET) along with Baylor, Arizona State and Southern California.
