PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA -- Duke posted a 25-over 313 Friday in the opening round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the challenging Sawgrass Country Club (par 72 - 6,976 yards). Freshman Adam Wood led the way for the Blue Devils with a four-over 76.
Host North Florida holds the opening round lead with an eight-over 296 with Oklahoma State one shot back and followed by UCLA (+12, 300), Alabama (+12, 300) and Texas (+13, 301).
Alabama's Tom Lovelady was the lone player to shoot under-par Friday posting a two-under 70 with Taylor Hancock (North Florida) two shots back and a group of four players rounding out the top five at one-over.
Wood got off to a slow start in the opening round with three straight bogeys to open play before settling in. He battled back to one-over following birdies on No. 7 and No. 9 before carding four straight pars following the turn. Wood suffered three bogeys over the final five holes of play to slip into a tie for 21st.
Senior Turner Southey-Gordon posted a six-over 78 and is tied for 42nd. He birdied the opening hole and added a pair of birdies on the back nine but was hampered by an eight on the par 4 fifth hole as well as a string of four bogeys over a five hole stretch on the back nine.
Alexander Matlari, a sophomore from Germany, shot a 79 and is tied for 52nd, while Jake Shuman carded an 80. Matlari started poorly with a bogey and quad-bogey. Following another bogey on No. 6 he collected birdies on No. 7 and No. 8 to slide back to four-over. He was unable to maintain the momentum on the back nine finishing with six pars and three bogeys.
Shuman also got off to a rough start going bogey, double-bogey, bogey. He had birdies on No. 6 and No. 8 but a double-bogey in between kept him at four-over on the front nine. He parred the first three holes after the turn but ran into more trouble with four bogeys over the next five holes of play.
Junior Motin Yeung was also in action for the Blue Devils but was DQ'd Friday for signing an incorrect scorecard.
Duke opens second round play tomorrow at 9:15 am on the back nine of Sawgrass Country Club. The Blue Devils will be paired with Coastal Carolina and UAB.
