AMES, Iowa – During the first day of the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, seven Duke athletes took to the track to compete. Senior Shaun Thompson provided the highlight of the day for the Blue Devils, setting a school record in the men's 5,000m.
Starting the day off for Duke, a trio of Blue Devils earned top-five finishes in the women's 200m. Senior Lauren Hansson paced the group with a second-place performance, crossing the finish line in 24.38. Freshman Maddy Price followed with a personal-best time of 24.48 to place fourth, the third-fastest time in school history, while sophomore Madeline Kopp ran a 24.66 to take fifth.
On the men's side, sophomore Chaz Hawkins finished 14th after clocking a 22.29, his second-fastest race of the season. Freshman Brett Bofinger set a personal best by running a 22.48, good for 23rd overall.
After the Blue Devils set three school records at last weekend's Virginia Tech Elite meet, Thompson continued that narrative by breaking the Duke record in the men's 5,000m. The senior out of Baldwinsville, N.Y., crossed the finish line in 13:47.22 to take seventh overall and fourth among collegiate runners, crushing the previous Duke record of 14:02.63 set by Mike Moverman in 2013. Thompson's performance would currently rank second in the ACC and 10th among all NCAA Division I athletes.
Graduate student Jessie Rubin rounded out the day for Duke, competing in her first 5,000m race of the season. Rubin, a native of Rockville, Md., placed 32nd in a time of 16:58.93.
A number of Blue Devils will return to the Lied Recreation Center for the second and final day of the Iowa State Classic Saturday, while other Duke athletes will compete tomorrow at the Millrose Games in New York City. The Millrose Games will be televised live on NBC Sports Network from 6:00-8:00 p.m., while www.armorytrack.com will feature a live webcast of the event from 5:00-6:00 p.m.
