WACO, Texas – Duke running backs coach Re'quan Boyette and safeties coach Matt Guerrieri have accepted invitations to take part in the inaugural American Football Coaches Foundation® (AFCA) 30 Under 30 Coaches' Leadership Institute. The Blue Devils will be the lone program with two representatives at the event.
The AFCA and NCAA Leadership Development have partnered for this prestigious program, which is aimed at training premier, future leaders in the football coaching profession.
Participants will meet at the 2016 AFCA Convention in San Antonio, Texas, for a full day of focused, interactive lectures on topics including ethics, leadership, NCAA rules, financial management, hiring and player safety. The AFCA aims to emphasize responsible influence, the importance of ethical behavior and the development of today's student-athlete.
Almost 200 coaches applied for the program. Applicants were required to meet a strict criterion. Eligibility was extended to high school (head coaches only), two-year college and four-year college coaches. Prospective participants were required to be a head coach or full-time assistant during the 2015 season. The application process included submission of a resume, personal statements responding to specific prompts and a letter of recommendation from a head coach or athletic director.
Boyette has helped the Blue Devils to three consecutive campaigns of 20 or more rushing TDs for the first time since 1974-76. Duke's 74 ground scores in the last two-plus years are tied for the third most in a three-season span in Duke history. The Blue Devils have also produced four rushes of 50 or more yards this season, the most in the last eight years.
Under Guerreri's direction, redshirt senior safety Jeremy Cash has turned in one of the best years in program history, earning Duke's first ACC Defensive Player of the Year honor. Cash was also a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award, Jim Thorpe Award, Senior CLASS Award and Lott IMPACT Trophy as well as a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award. Cash is a 2015 USA Today First Team All-America and a first team all-league selection.
The 30 AFCA participants who were selected hold an average age of 27 and include nine FBS coaches, four FCS coaches, two NCAA Division II coaches, five NCAA Division III coaches, three junior college coaches, three NAIA coaches and four high school coaches.
“The selection of 30 young coaches out of our vast organization was an amazing process,” AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. “I believe we have an absolutely outstanding class. This is the beginning of something I think will be important for the future. These coaches will train to be leaders in making our great game safer. We also look at this program as one of many methods to develop future leadership within the Association.”
