DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University head women's lacrosse coach Kerstin Kimel has been named a finalist for Lacrosse Magazine's Best Women's Coach honor, as announced by the publication this week. The contest is a part of the magazine's end of the year Best of Lacrosse 2015 series.
Kimel, who has led the program from its inception in 1996, guided the Blue Devils back to the NCAA semifinals for the first time since 2011 while undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Under her direction, the 2015 squad compiled a 16-5 record and made the program's 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance while rounding out the spring ranked fourth in the final national poll.
Kimel also registered the 250th victory of her coaching career Feb. 22, 2015, to become one of just six active Division I coaches with 250 or more wins.
She was presented with the prestigious Diane Geppi-Aikens Memorial Award at last month's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Honors Banquet. The award is the IWLCA's highest honor and recognizes lifetime achievement in the women's game.
Other finalists for Lacrosse Magazine's Best Women's Coach include Kelly Lickert-Orr of Cortland, Pat McCabe of Adelphi and Cathy Reese of Maryland.
