DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University redshirt senior Conner Hartmann earned the No. 2 overall seed at 197 pounds to highlight the Blue Devils in the brackets heading into the 2016 Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle Jan. 1-2.
Duke's 165-pounder Jake Faust also earned a top-10 seed, coming in at No. 5. Overall, 13 Blue Devils will compete in the prestigious event held at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Hartmann, ranked third nationally, receives a bye for his first match and will wrestle Jacob Seely of Northern Colorado. A potential semifinal matchup with No. 15 John Bolich of Lehigh awaits Hartmann should both wrestlers win their opening three bouts.
Faust will go up against the winner of Dominic Lampe of Chattanooga and West Virginia's Connor Flynn. Ranked 16th in the InterMat poll, Faust could face No. 4 seed Casey Fuller of Edinboro in the quarterfinal, while top-ranked Alex Dieringer likely awaits Faust in the semifinal should he advance.
Evan Botwin and Zach Finesilver will be in the 141-pound bracket for the Blue Devils. Botwin will battle Michigan's Zehlin Storr in his opening match, while Finesilver has West Virginia's Christian Monserrat to start the day. Two victories from the pair would pit the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in the third round, respectively.
At 149 pounds, Mitch Finesilver garnered a bye in the first round. He will await the winner of Ryan Mosley (Gardner-Webb) and Ty Millward (West Virginia) . He could grapple with No. 3 seed C.J. Cobb of Penn in the third round.
Connor Bass will wrestle The Citadel's Aaron Walker in his first bout of the tournament. Walker is seeded eighth overall at 157 pounds. The winner likely will compete against No. 10 seed Zack Beitz of Penn State.

Brian Dorsey will wrestle Chattanooga's Bryce Carr to kick off the action with a win pitting him against No. 3 seed Ethan Ramos of North Carolina. Alec Schenk rounds out the Duke contingent at 174 pounds versus 10th-seeded Casey Kent of Penn State.
Trey Adamson and The Citadel's Sawyer Root will meet in their first bout at 184 pounds, while Tyler Patrick will most likely go up against sixth-ranked Lorenzo Thomas of Penn after getting a bye in his first bout. Spencer Neff completes the 184-pound group with a match against Matthew Okaiye of Michigan State.
Brendan Walsh, completing Duke's lineup at heavyweight, will wrestle Doug Vollaro of Lehigh to start his morning. A win from Walsh will most likely give him a rematch with Appalachian State's Denzel Dejournette in the third round.
