DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt senior
Jeremy Cash has been named the recipient of the 2015 Jim Tatum Award as the Atlantic Coast Conference's top senior football scholar-athlete, the league announced Thursday.
Cash, a 6-2, 210-pound safety, becomes the fourth straight and league-high eighth overall Duke player to receive the Tatum Award. Duke's current string of consecutive recipients includes quarterback Sean Renfree (2012), offensive tackle
Perry Simmons (2013) and linebacker
David Helton (2014).
Named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday, Cash becomes the first student-athlete in ACC history to secure both the Tatum Award and a major on-field honor in the same season.
Cash has already received his undergraduate degree in psychology and is currently pursuing a master's in liberal studies. He owns a 3.80 grade point average in grad school and was an Academic All-ACC selection in 2014.
The Miami, Fla., product is a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award, Jim Thorpe Award and Lott IMPACT Trophy. Cash was a consensus 2015 Midseason All-America pick and the national player of the week by five outlets following Duke's 34-20 victory against No. 20 Georgia Tech.
Through 12 games this season, Cash has amassed 101 tackles, 18.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, eight quarterback pressures, four pass breakups, three caused fumbles and one fumble recovery on the season. He has now reached the 100-tackle plateau in three consecutive seasons and is Duke's career leader in caused fumbles with nine.
The Tatum Award is given annually in memory of the late Jim Tatum to the top senior student-athlete (in athletic eligibility) among the league's football players. Tatum, a two-time ACC Coach of the Year, coached in the 1950s at both Maryland and North Carolina and believed strongly in the concept of the student-athlete.
The 2015 Tatum Award will be presented at the ACC's Night of Legends event which will be held Friday (5:30 p.m.) at the Charlotte Convention Center as part of the festivities held around the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game.
