GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Duke's Chris Douglas, a 2003 First Team All-ACC selection, has been named the recipient of the James E. Tatum Award, Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford announced today.
The Tatum Award is given annually in memory of the late Jim Tatum to the top senior student-athlete among the league's football players. Tatum, a two-time ACC Coach of the Year, coached in the fifties at both Maryland and North Carolina and believed strongly in the concept of the student-athlete.
A three-year starter for the Blue Devils, Douglas finished his career as the school's all-time leading rusher with 3,122 yards. The Sherrills Ford, N.C., native rushed for 1,138 yards this past season - the third highest single season total in school history - and currently ranks second in the conference in rushing (94.8) and third in all-purpose yardage (120.2).
The senior tailback ranks second all-time among ACC career all-purpose yardage leaders with 5,748 yards and is 21st on the league's career rushing list with 3,122 yards.
A Computer Science major with a minor in History, Douglas has posted a 3.480 grade point average over the last two semesters, while maintaining a 2.955 GPA throughout his career at Duke. Douglas is a two-year member of Duke's Student-Athlete Advisory Council and has been a two-time Academic All-ACC selection (2001 and 2002). He was the recipient of the ACC's annual Top Six For Service Award this year.
