What is your favorite lacrosse memory?
EM: For my first lacrosse game, my coach told the team that after the game, each person would get a scoop of ice cream for each goal she scored. He bought me three scoops of ice cream that day which was really cool because my mom only ever let me have one.
When did you start playing lacrosse?
EM: I started playing lacrosse the summer going into fifth grade. My stick was one of those really old Brine sticks that had daisies on the shaft and no pocket. The first time I ever played was at UVA Graves Mountain Camp, and I distinctly remember walking straight up to [Virginia head coach] Julie Myers and saying, “Hi, Coach Julie. I just want you to know that I've never played lacrosse before, and I have no idea what I'm doing.” That's all I remember from the early days — that moment and the feeling of being really hot and sweaty without any idea what was happening around me.
Why did you choose Duke?
EM: I didn't know what I was looking for at the beginning of the recruiting process, but in Duke, I found a fantastic school, a great program and a team that felt like a family. I realized that Duke was what I wanted. Everything felt right.
What are your goals for your collegiate career?
EM: I want to reach my full potential as a lacrosse player and as a teammate, and I want to win a national championship with my team.
Quick Hitters:
Favorite athlete: Hope Solo
Hobbies: I like to bake, read, and watch rom-coms
Favorite movie: The Lion King
Favorite TV show: House
Favorite musician: BEYONCÉ
Pre-game ritual/superstition: In high school my mom would make me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and cut it into a star on game days, but it wasn't really a ritual for me. I just liked that I didn't have to make my own lunch on those days.
If you were to play another sport, what would it be? I would row
Hidden talent: I'm a decent artist. I used to paint, but my senior year, I focused on drawing scenes through various windows. I'm very detail oriented when it comes to art.
Best advice you've received: “Look at the cage before you shoot, Ellie Majure.” – Cally Chakrian
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In 10 years, I'll be 28. That's kind of a weird time … I guess I see myself with my husband about to have our first kid. I'm a novelist, or I have a job where I get to tell everyone what to do. I'm also drawing up the blueprints for our (my) fantasy house that we will eventually have built.
To be a part of the Duke women's lacrosse program is … surreal. It's an honor to be a part of this team and family.
