DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University men's soccer senior has been named one of the 59 NCAA Division I college players invited to participate in the 2016 Major League Soccer Player Combine. The top collegiate players from all over the country will showcase their talents in front of representatives from all 20 MLS clubs in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from Jan. 7-12.
Mathers, a first team All-ACC and third team All-South Region selection, paced the Blue Devils on offense with eight goals and eight assists for 24 points. The Texas native moved into an attacking role as a senior after serving as Duke's utility man the previous three seasons.
The three-time All-ACC pick had a career game in Duke's 6-2 victory over NC State, scoring three goals and an assist for the Blue Devils to garner ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors. The hat trick was the first by a Blue Devil since Andrew Wenger had three in the 5-2 victory over the Wolfpack in 2011. The senior captain finished with seven points on the night, assisting on the Blue Devils' fourth goal, to match Wenger's output against the Wolfpack four years ago.
For his career, Mathers has started 69 of his 71 games played and tallied 14 goals and 18 assists for 46 points.
The Blue Devils have four players currently active in the MLS, including MLS Cup finalists Mike Grella and Sean Davis of New York Red Bulls. Grella was a finalist for the league's Newcomer of the Year Award after his stellar first season with the Red Bulls.
All invited players will be eligible for selection in the 2016 SuperDraft presented by adidas that will take place on Thursday, Jan. 14 in Baltimore, MD.
A committee of MLS coaches and NCAA Division I coaches from every conference selected the invitees, all of whom completed their college eligibility this season. Additional invitees, including: Generation adidas signings, non-collegiate players, and more college seniors, will be announced in the coming weeks.
