DURHAM, N.C. – Duke continued its successful fall semester in the classroom Thursday as five Blue Devils – Gabe Brandner, DeVon Edwards, Ross Martin, Thomas Sirk and A.J. Wolf – were named to the Academic All-District III First Team, according to an announcement by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
It is the second straight season in which Edwards, a redshirt junior safety and kickoff returner, has received first team honors while it is the initial selection for redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Brandner, senior kicker Martin, redshirt junior quarterback Sirk and redshirt junior defensive tackle Wolf.
Duke, which has had 17 CoSIDA Academic All-District picks in the last four seasons, had the most selections of any FBS program nationally this season. The Blue Devils were followed in the ACC by Wake Forest (two), Boston College (one), Georgia Tech (one), Miami (one) and Pittsburgh (one).
Brandner has started every game at left tackle. The Blythewood, S.C., native is a two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection. He is part of an offensive line that ranks among national leaders in fewest sacks allowed per game (0.63/3rd), fewest tackles for loss allowed per game (3.63/4th) and fewest yards lost to TFLs (81/2nd). The line also leads the ACC in fewest sacks per pass attempt (58.40). Brandner is helping the offense by opening holes for 180.63 rushing yards a game and 16 ground touchdowns. Prior to Duke, Brandner was a National Football Foundation National High School Scholar-Athlete Award finalist. He owns a 3.630 grade point average as an evolutionary anthropology major.
Edwards is a two-time All-America honoree as he was a 2013 Walter Camp Foundation pick and a 2014 Sports Illustrated selection. Edwards is also a two-time Academic All-ACC Team and ACC Academic Honor Roll selection. The Covington, Ga., product is tied for the team lead in interceptions (one) while ranking tied for second in sacks (1.0) and third in total tackles (64). He has been a key part of Duke's defense that ranks eighth nationally in passing yards per game (166.13), ninth in total defense (295.00 ypg) and 10th in scoring defense (16.13). Edwards holds a 3.355 grade point average as a psychology major while pursuing a markets and management certificate.
Martin, a 2015 NFF Campbell Trophy semifinalist, is a three-time Academic All-ACC Team and ACC Academic Honor Roll selection. A semifinalist for the 2015 Lou Groza Award, Martin is a two-time All-America and three-time All-ACC pick. His 16 made field goals are tied for the fifth most nationally this season. A native of Solon, Ohio, Martin already owns Duke's record for career points scored (383), field goals (68) and points after touchdowns (179). Among active kickers nationally, Martin ranks second in field goals and points. Martin boasts a 3.573 grade point average as a psychology major while pursuing a markets and management certificate.
Sirk is a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection who has guided Duke to a 6-2 start and two weeks in the national rankings. He ranks second in the ACC and 27th nationally in total offensive yards per game (283.6). The Glen St. Mary, Fla., product has accounted for 26 career touchdowns, despite making just eight starts. Sirk has also thrown only three interceptions, tied for the 10th fewest nationally. His 155 consecutive passes without an interception mark the fifth longest streak in school history. He has also helped Duke surrender just 79 plays of 10 yards or more, the fifth fewest in the country. Duke's 321 yards on tackles for loss are the third most nationally. The Greenwich, Conn., product was named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honoree following Duke's 34-20 win over No. 20 Georgia Tech on Sept. 26.
