PHILADELPHIA - Redshirt senior safety Jeremy Cash was named a semifinalist for the 21st Chuck Bednarik Award, according to an announcement by Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski on Monday. Cash is one of 20 semifinalists for the award, which goes to the outstanding college defensive player of the year.
A 6-2, 210-pound product of Miami, Fla., Cash enters this week's game ranked third in the country in tackles for loss per game with 1.94 and is third in total TFL with 15.5. He stands second on the team with 70 tackles and paces the squad with 2.5 sacks, eight quarterback pressures and three forced fumbles.
In October, Cash was placed on six midseason All-America squads and was named a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. He is also a two-time Lott IMPACT Trophy Player of the Week and the October 1 Bednarik Player of the Week.
Of the 20 semifinalists, 16 are making their debuts as Bednarik Award semifinalists. Defensive ends Joey Bosa (Ohio State) and Shilique Calhoun (Michigan State) join cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III (Florida) and linebacker Jaylon Smith (Notre Dame) as repeat semifinalists from a season ago.
Last season, the Bednarik Award was earned by linebacker Scooby Wright of Arizona.
The winners of the 21st Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be broadcast on ESPN on December 10, from the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. Three finalists for each award will be announced on November 24 and a second round of voting will take place at that time.
The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club's 79th Awards Gala on March 11, 2016, at the Tropicana Resort & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Semifinalist voting will begin November 5 and close November 22. Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA head football coaches, sports information directors and selected national media.
