DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke redshirt sophomore quarterback
Parker Boehme amassed 328 all-purpose yards in his first career start, but Pittsburgh outscored the Blue Devils 17-3 in the second half to pick up the 31-13 ACC Coastal Division win this afternoon at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Boehme was 23-of-42 for 248 yards through the air and added 80 yards on the ground, while
Anthony Nash had a career receiving day for Duke (6-4, 3-3 ACC) with five catches for 101 yards. Pittsburgh (7-3, 5-1 ACC) quarterback Nate Peterman threw for 180 yards and three touchdowns as the Panthers outgained Duke 448-361 for the game.
It was a tale of two halves overall for the Blue Devils offense. Duke compiled 283 yards of offense in the first two quarters, but managed just 78 yards in the final 30 minutes, including -2 yards rushing, as Pittsburgh's defense clamped down. The Panthers, meanwhile, had a balanced effort with 201 in the first half and 251 in the third and fourth quarters.
Pittsburgh and Duke traded touchdowns in the first quarter, finishing the first 15 minutes even at seven apiece. Boehme was the driving force behind the Blue Devils' success on the scoring drive in accounting for 72 of the 79 yards during the nine-play drive, including the 1-yard plunge into the end zone.
Boehme continued to rack up the yardage on the next drive, breaking off a career-best 77-yard rush to the 7-yard line thanks to a huge hole created by his offensive line. The Blue Devils' drive stalled on the 1-yard line as Duke turned the ball over on downs after a failed completion.
The Blue Devils and Panthers traded field goals late in the second quarter to head into halftime knotted at 10-10.
Pittsburgh started the second half the same way it began the game, moving the ball 81 yards on its opening drive of the third quarter to go ahead 17-10. The Panthers, forcing a three-and-out by the Blue Devils, rode the arm of Nate Peterman on a 72- yard drive for a 24-10 lead midway through the third period.
Ross Martin pulled the Blue Devils within two scores late in the third quarter, banging a 51-yard field goal off the crossbar. The 51-yarder marked his sixth career field goal of 50-plus yards and the second of the year for the standout kicker.
The Panthers responded with another touchdown on their ensuing drive to secure the 18-point victory.
Deondre Singleton and
A.J. Wolf paced the defensive effort with 10 tackles apiece. Wolf made seven solo stops and Singleton had five to go with his two tackles-for-loss, pass breakup and forced fumble.
The Blue Devils hit the road for their final two games. Duke takes on Virginia November 21 at 3:30 p.m., in Charlottesville.
