DURHAM, N.C. – One day prior to its final home football game of the season, Duke University dedicated the Davis Family Kicking Field at the Brooks Practice Facility on Friday morning. The new surface, which measures 30 yards wide by 60 yards long and includes one regulation goalpost at the west end, was completed in September and is used exclusively by Duke's kicking and punting specialists.
"Duke is, among other great things, an institution of opportunity,” Gary Davis said. “Our son, Tim Davis, walked on to the football team in 1988 and graduated in 1992 as the second team All-ACC punter and was an Academic All-ACC selection on a full scholarship. Tim worked very hard for this and our family is truly grateful for the opportunity given to him by Duke."
Tim Davis was an All-ACC and Academic All-ACC punter for the Blue Devils as a senior in 1992 after finishing second in the league and 33rd nationally with a punting average of 41.20 yards per boot. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Davis finished his career with 94 punts for 3,734 yards and continues to rank 10th on the school's all-time punting average list.
On Friday morning, the Davis family and a group of invited guests gathered with the team following the Blue Devils' practice. Duke Vice President and Director of Duke Athletics Dr. Kevin White and head coach David Cutcliffe both shared remarks at the event.
“We are deeply appreciative of Gary Davis and his family,” Cutcliffe said. “With Tim having been a specialist, this is something we were passionate about as a program. In talking with Gary, he has that same passion for the kicking game and specialists. This is the best kicking facility in the country. The surface is incredible and it has made an absolute difference.”
Cutcliffe presented the Davis family with a commemorative Duke helmet at the dedication ceremony.
“This field is awesome,” redshirt senior punter Will Monday said. “It's amazing to see how far this program has come and how many people really want to be a part of it. It's a true honor to be a part of all this. We think of the specialist unit as a brotherhood. As anybody comes through, they'll always be part of our family. To know the guys who are coming after me are going to have something like this field is awesome. They don't realize how lucky they are.”
On Saturday, the Davis family will be recognized on the field during Duke's game against Pittsburgh. Kickoff is set for 12 noon at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium.
