DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University redshirt sophomore Jake Faust kicked off the wrestling season with a bang, taking home the Hokie Open 165 pound title. Faust registered four wins, including an upset of two-time Pac 12 champion and No. 4 Jim Wilson of Stanford in the title bout.
Faust started the day strong, pinning Mike Ciavarro of Virginia Tech in the third period to remain in the championship bracket. He added consecutive decisions to earn a spot in the title match against Stanford's Wilson.
The win over fourth-ranked Wilson was the highest ranked opponent Faust has beaten in his career, while the Hokie Open victory was his first tournament title of his career. Faust, who hails from Bellville, Ohio, collected a 4-0 record in the Hokie Open.
Faust's victory at the Hokie Open launched him into the national rankings. He climbed to No. 6 in the FloWrestling poll and to 17th in the InterMat individual rankings.
Duke returns to action Nov. 22 at the Wolfpack Open.
