CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – With 18 holes remaining at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, both Blue Devil sophomore Leona Maguire and the Duke women's golf team hold leads at the 6,379-yard, Par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Dealing with rainy conditions for most of the round, the Blue Devils totaled a five-over-par, 293, Saturday and holds an 11-stroke lead with a 36-hole total of 578. Arkansas is the next closest team with a 589, while Louisville (589), NC State (592), Michigan State (592), Alabama (593), Tennessee (594), North Carolina (598), Auburn (602) and Virginia (603) rounded out the top 10.
The Blue Devils will be going for their third consecutive Tar Heel Invitational title and the 14th in school history.
Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, moved into the individual lead Saturday, after carding an even-par, 72, in round two and holds a three-under-par, 141. She leads by one stroke over Molly Skapik of Louisville, 142. The reigning National Player of the Year, Maguire opened her second round with a birdie on the 366-yard, par four first hole and then had a bogey on No. 4, before closing with 14 straight pars.
After carding a two-under, 70, in round one, junior Sandy Choi turned in a 75 on the second day and will enter the final round tied fourth with a one-over-par, 145. Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, hit 13 fairways, eight greens and had 29 putts on the day. She kicked off her round with six straight pars and then went on a stretch where she had three bogeys over a span of five holes. Choi collected back-to-back birdies on No. 12 and No. 13 to get back to one-over. She closed with bogeys on No. 15 and No. 18 to finish with a 75.
With rounds of 73 and 74 over the first two days, freshman Virginia Elena Carta is tied 15th with a 147. A product of Udine, Italy, Carta played her first 10 holes at even par before turning in two bogeys and seven pars on the back nine.
Senior Celine Boutier signed for a 75 Saturday and is tied 17th with a 148. Boutier, a native of Montrouge, France, was even par before suffering a double-bogey on the 505-yard, par five sixth hole. She played her next 12 holes at one-over-par, which included a birdie on the 187-yard, par three 12th hole.
Rebounding from a round of 79 Friday, sophomore Gurbani Singh tied for Duke's best score of the day with an even-par, 72. Singh, who is from New Delhi, India, totaled one birdie and one bogey on both the front and back as she hit 15 greens, 11 fairways and rolls 34 putts.
Head coach Dan Brooks will be going for his 123rd career victory in the final round, which would extend his NCAA Division I record for wins.
Duke will tee off Sunday in a shotgun start beginning at 9:15 a.m., along with Louisville and Arkansas.
