BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duke track and field team returned to Rector Field House for the final session of the two-day Hokie Invitational, turning in another strong performance.
Highlighting the day for Duke was Megan Clark placing first in the women's pole vault with a 13-5.25 (4.10) effort. The junior from Fort Benning, Ga., was joined in the event by freshman Madison Heath who finished fourth, clearing 12-11.50 (3.95) for the fourth-best mark in school history.
The Blue Devils produced two other top-three finishes in the field events. Redshirt junior Stephen Boals took third in the men's shot put, tossing the implement 58-9.25 (17.91), while junior Maddie Morrow leapt 5-8.00 (1.73), tying her personal best set last week, to take third in the women's high jump.
Capping the field events, graduate student Erica Brand finished seventh in the women's shot put with a throw of 43-10.00 (13.36), and freshmen high jumpers Colt Sessions and Andrew Pancoast took sixth and eighth, respectively, each clearing 6-6.25 (1.99). In the women's long jump, sophomore Karly Gregory just missed a top-10 placing, notching a mark of 18-1.00 (5.51) to finish 11th overall, but moved into the No. 4 spot on Duke's all-time list.
On the track, the women's 200m race featured four Blue Devils placing in the top 10. Senior Lauren Hansson turned in the highest finish for Duke, placing fourth with a personal-best time of 24.37. Fellow senior Elizabeth Kerpon followed in fifth, clocking a time of 24.38. Freshman Maddy Price jumped to the fourth spot on Duke's all-time list, running a 24.66 to place eighth, while sophomore Madeline Kopp came in 10th with a 24.76 performance.
Senior Callie Francis started the day off for the Blue Devil runners with a seventh-place showing in the women's 400, running a 56.70. In the 800, the Duke men and women combined for three top-four finishes. Sophomore Gina Daniel ran a 2:17.76 to take fourth on the women's side, while sophomore Dylan Murphy (1:54.43) and freshman Kyle Francis (1:54.59) took second and third, respectively, for the men. Rounding out the individual races for Duke was junior William Rooney, placing second in the men's 5,000 with a time of 14:27.47.
In the distance medley relay, Duke placed two men's squads in the top three. Finishing second with a time of 10:03.26 was the team of Henry Farley, Christian Vail, Dylan Newman and Brian Schoepfer, while Jordan Burton, Kyle Francis, Nate McClafferty and Sean Kelly combined for a 10:09.25 to place third.
With the completion of the Hokie Invitational, the Duke track and field teams will turn their attention to the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York next weekend, Jan. 30-31.
