Duke Head Coach David CutcliffeOpening Statement:“That was a really hard fought and physical football game. We at times played well in all three phases, but we didn't piece all three phases as well as we normally would together to put ourselves in a position to be successful. Offensively, it was a tough day. I have to give Miami credit—they won a lot of the battles. I'm very proud of our people for continuing to battle. We fought hard, and on a day when traditionally the better part of our team struggles, we have a chance to win in the fourth quarter. 22-10 final score, but we gave up a few unfortunate plays there defensively. Otherwise, we played just about as good as they could play against a team that has as many weapons as Miami does. We'll learn from this—nobody is panicking. It's a loss, and you deal with a loss. We're going to look at a lot of the little things that didn't go well and improve upon them. But thank goodness we're not having to correct effort and attitude—both of those were outstanding. So we'll build on that and challenge ourselves to grow.”
On the team's discipline and communication:“I don't think the problem is a matter of discipline and communication. We had three bad snaps, we had some penalties, but those were not the biggest issues to me. The biggest issues for me were not winning the battles we needed to win. Whether it was outside, receivers and tight ends vs. secondaries or at times it was our front vs. their front. The most important thing for us is to win the battles. We're not an undisciplined team. If we had won more battles, the game wouldn't have looked like that. When you started getting whipped, things will start deteriorating for you. We're a disciplined team, but when you're losing some battles, things start showing up, and we have to manage that better. Even on days when you're not doing well, you still have to manage the football, and keep the down and distance as normal as you can in order to be successful.”
Duke Quarterback Anthony BooneOn what Duke could improve on offensively:“Definitely improve on throwing and catching and not shooting ourselves in the foot. I think we had more negative plays than positive plays, which really hurt us. We would have good drives going and then get called for holding, blocking in back, offsides, and those kind of things will kill us, so we just have to do better. We have a bye week coming up and then we go to Atlanta, so we just need to put this game behind us and keep moving forward.”
On changes from last season to this season:“Nothing's changed, but we have to just be more efficient. We have to practice more efficiently and hopefully it shows up on Saturdays. I felt like we had a pretty good week at practice, but today we just weren't as efficient as we needed to be as far as mental errors and from an execution standpoint. Miami had a great game plan, and they came out and executed very highly, and they made a lot of plays.”
Duke Wide Receiver Jamison CrowderOn his opinion about today's game:“It's just one of those games where things just don't go your way as far as execution goes. We had a good week at practice this week. You could tell Miami prepared well, and things just didn't go our way.”
On Miami's performance today compared to previous games this season:“Miami had a lot of energy tonight. You could definitely tell defensively that they were fired up. A lot of their guys found a way to get to the ball, and they did a great job of game tackling and making plays on the ball. You could definitely tell they had a different energy level than previous games and had a lot of intensity.”
On Duke's offense today:“We just have to keep working. We have a week off, so that will help out with guys getting back healthy, and we just have to keep playing. It's a long season, and that's one loss. It definitely hurts, but you can't dwell on it. We just have to look at the things we did wrong and try and correct those things and just keep going.”
Duke Safety DeVon EdwardsOn Duke's defensive performance:“When we first got out there, Miami had a lot of energy, and they were hyped and they came out really fast, so we just had to get used to the tempo and the atmosphere. I feel like once we got under control, we were able to compete for the rest of the game.”
On the two passing touchdowns from Miami and their influence on the outcome:“Those plays played a big part, but there were a lot of little things that we should've capitalized on. We had a tipped ball that went through one of our player's hands, and we should've had that. But we can't really dwell on one or two mistakes because it was a long game and we could've done a lot of things better, but those touchdowns did definitely hurt.”
On what will be worked on during Duke's bye-week:“I think we are going to do the same thing we've been doing and work on communicating better and getting better with our hand signals and making sure everybody is where they are supposed to be.”
Duke Linebacker David HeltonOn Duke's defensive performance in tonight's game:“Throughout the whole game, we kept saying to each other that 'we are going to have to win this game' just like any game that we've ever played, we have to win it—it relies on the defense. We were trying to sit back and cover each man how we should, and they just got a big play on us.”
Helton's thought on Duke's offensive performance tonight:“We can't point fingers [at the offense]. That's something that we need to be able to do according to what the circumstances are. All I can say is, I'm very proud of how hard we fought tonight, but it just didn't turn out in our favor. Miami had some really athletic players and had some big plays, but I'm really proud of how we fought.”
Duke Safety Jeremy CashCash's opinion on defense's performance tonight:“There were times where our back was against the wall but we just had to fight and stay in the game. It was hard, but we managed to do so. Unfortunately, the end result wasn't what we wanted to see, but we just have to play better next time.”
Cash's thoughts on 4th and 19 play where Miami scored:“I was in man coverage and my guy just jogged off the line, so I didn't think he was going to run a route, but then he ended up running a route, so by the time I was able to change speeds, I started cramping, and he managed to get the ball in the end zone. I tried to get the ball out of his arms, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to.”
