
Duke Starts 2014 Fall Season With Impressive Friday

CARY, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team began its 2014 fall slate Friday by hosting the Duke Fab Four Invitational. The Blue Devils sent three doubles teams and seven individuals into action at the Cary Tennis Park and came away with five doubles wins and five singles triumphs.
Duke began Friday with strong play in doubles, winning five of six matches. In the blue draw, junior Bruno Semenzato and freshman Nicolas Alvarez teamed up to win two matches and advance to the finals. In the duo's first match, they earned an 8-7 decision over N.C. State's Simon Norenius and Austin Powell. In the second match, Semenzato and Alverez took down the draw's top seed in Charlotte's Jordi Massalle Ferrer and Kamil Khalil, 8-5. Duke's pair will face Louisvllle's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Michael Lippens in the championship on Saturday.
The Blue Devils also have a doubles team in the white draw championship. Redshirt senior Chris Mengel and senior Raphael Hemmeler downed William & Mary's Will Juggins and Lars de Boer, 8-6, in the opening match before cruising to an 8-2 victory against Wake Forest's Sam Bloom and Anthony Delcore. Duke will face Kentucky's Jake Stefanik and Charles Minc in the draw's finals Saturday.
In the black draw, senior Cale Hammond and Daniel McCall defeated Louisville's Albert Wagner and Chris Simich, 8-5, before suffering the Blue Devils' only setback in doubles, falling to William & Mary's Addison Appleby and Christian Cargill, 8-5. The Duke duo will face Charlotte's Vikram Hundal and Jack Williams in the third-place match.
During the afternoon session of singles play, the Blue Devils compiled a 5-2 record in first round action.
In the black draw, Hemmeler downed Khalil 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday morning, when he'll face Wake Forest's Sam Bloom. In the other half of the draw, McCall suffered a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 setback to Louisville's Jeffrey Brown. Alvarez, ranked No. 8 in the preseason newcomer/freshman ITA rankings, earned a 6-1, 7-5 decision against William & Mary's Cargill to advance to the quarterfinals. McCall has a bye Saturday morning and will play in the consolation semifinals. Alvarez faces Elon's Josh Luck in the quarterfinals.
In the blue singles draw, Hammond advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Radford's Javier Waase. Hammond will face N.C. State's Beck Bond Saturday morning. Mengel also will play in the quarterfinals of the blue draw after a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Kentucky's Stefanik.
Rounding out the singles play in the white draw, Semenzato reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against William & Mary's de Boer. Semenzato, who is ranked No. 59 in the preseason ITA rankings, will face Louisville's Lippens in the quarterfinals. Sophomore TJ Pura suffered a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Ferra and will face Wake Forest's Nicholas Osterling in the consolation quarterfinals.
The Duke Fab Four Invitational resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with men's and women's singles main draw play.
