Maddie Crutchfield
Midfield l Concord, N.H. l St. Paul's School
Prior to Duke: A product of Concord, N.H., Crutchfield was a four-time US Lacrosse All-American and New England Prep School All-Star at St. Paul's. She led her squad in scoring all four years, compiling 383 points (218g, 165a), and guided the team to a pair of Independent School League titles. Crutchfield was selected to compete in the Under Armour All-America Girls Lacrosse Classic earlier this month, where she tallied two goals and led all players in the game with three ground balls.
What is your favorite lacrosse memory?
MC: Ever since I was little I wanted to play in the Senior Under Armour All-American game, so playing for the North team was a highlight. Also, the memories I have playing for my mom from second grade through back-to-back ISL championships at St. Paul's School (Concord, N.H.) are ones I'll always treasure.
Why did you choose Duke?
MC: Duke has always held a special place in my heart. Duke not only embraces the student-athlete, but empowers the student-athlete. I am not sacrificing my academic goals or my athletic goals here. I am challenged as much in the classroom as I am on the field, and that was something extremely important to me when choosing a school. Also, Duke's facilities and athletic staff are tough to beat!
What are your goals for your collegiate career?
MC: To win ACCs and a national championship. My individual goal is to be the toughest competitor I can be for four years.
Who has had the biggest impact on your life?
MC: My family. My parents are incredible and my three older siblings are my biggest supporters. The five of them make me feel like I can do anything, and I can't thank them enough for getting me to where I am.
Quick Hitters:
Favorite athlete: Hobey Baker
Hobbies: Singing and dancing (I don't know how many people would support my dancing though…)
Favorite movie: The Guardian or The Notebook
Favorite musician: Pretty much anyone country (Keith Urban, Jake Owen…)
Favorite food: California roll or Chipotle
Pre-game ritual/superstition: At the beginning of every season I put a penny under the sole of my cleat for good luck. But pre-game, I just have to be listening to music.
If you were to play another sport, what would it be? Soccer
Hidden talent: I know all the lyrics to “Ice Ice Baby” and the dance to “Thriller”
Best advice you've received: “It doesn't take talent to hustle.”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully doing something I love, and probably wishing I was back here at Duke!
Best place lacrosse has taken you: Here! Vail [Colorado] would be a close second.
To be a part of the Duke women's lacrosse program is … to be a part of a family. I expected this team to be a fun group that I would be excited to hang out with, and they have not disappointed! I am constantly laughing when I am with them. Duke lacrosse is as special as I hoped it would be.
