DURHAM, N.C. – The All-America accolades continue to accumulate for Duke redshirt senior offensive lineman Laken Tomlinson, who was named to the Sporting News All-America second team, according to an announcement by the publication Wednesday. Tomlinson has been named to five All-America teams so far, garnering first team honors from the Walter Camp Foundation and Associated Press and second team accolades from USA Today and Athlon Sports.
Tomlinson is the first Blue Devil to receive All-America citations from five or more publications since Clarkston Hines was placed on five first team squads in 1989. Tomlinson, Hines and Bob Matheson (1966) are the only three Duke players since 1964 to be named to five or more All-America teams. Tomlinson is also the first Duke student-athlete to be placed on two first team All-America honors in the same season since punter Brian Morton in 2000.
Duke's last Sporting News All-America selection was third team defensive tackle honoree Vince Oghobaase in 2009.
A 6-3, 330-pound native of Chicago, Ill., Tomlinson has started 51 consecutive games and helped the offense to 390 points this year, the third most in program history. The anchor of the offensive line, he leads the unit which leads the country in fewest tackles per game allowed (3.33) and is tied for the 13th in fewest sacks surrendered (13.0).
Duke is averaging 398.12 yards per game this year and is within range of having its third straight campaign averaging 400 or more yards per contest, a feat accomplished just one other time in program history, from 1987-89. This year is also the second in school history the Blue Devils have collected 20 rushing and 20 passing touchdowns, joining last year's squad. Duke joins Florida State as the only ACC teams in the 20-20 club in 2013 and 2014.
Named to the All-ACC first team each of the last two seasons, Tomlinson has been selected to participate in the Reese's Senior Bowl and is an Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award nominee. He was also one of 11 student-athletes named to the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
