Happy November Duke Lacrosse Fans!
Before I jump into the month of November, I know you are eager to hear the results of our Halloween competition! Drum roll please … with their reenactment of Austin Powers, the senior class took home the gold pumpkin for the third year in row. A three-peat victory has only been accomplished twice before, by the classes of 2011 and 2007. Despite my obvious resentment, I must confess, the win was rightfully awarded. Kerrin Maurer dropped jaws in one of the most disturbing and downright funniest costumes I have ever witnessed. Kerrin's “Fat Bastard” costume came complete with a full body fat suit and chest hair. Also, Erin Tenneson's impersonation of the legendary Austin Powers was so accurate that Coach Kimel awarded her an honorary mention.
In second place, the sophomore class impressed with “stars of the 90s.” Their choreographed dance moves, flashy accessories and flawlessly puffed hair put the real Spice Girls and Britney Spears to shame. The second honoree of the night, Helen Cammerzell will forever be called Heline Dion after her rendition of Celine's “My Heart Will Go On”. Still awaiting our grand entrance, my grade was unable to witness her spectacular performance, but Coach Kimel assured us it was one for the ages.
In third place, the freshmen poked a little fun at senior Kerrin Maurer and a few of her questionable style choices. Using Kerrin's Instagram, the girls collected her “throw back Thursdays,” and collectively formed “Kerrin through the Ages.” I have to give the freshmen major props for both their creativity and accurate execution. My personal favorite was Gracie Fallon as “Kerrin the Prom Queen.”
In fourth place, the juniors grudgingly hobbled across the finish line for the third year in a row. However, in my biased opinion we were unquestionably the cutest crew. Also inspired by “throw back Thursdays,” (we swear it was our idea first) we each replicated a costume from our past. The fourth-place ribbon was agonizing but we blame on our parents for not designing more creative costumes during our youth. Sorry Mom and Dad, but Winnie the Pooh just doesn't compete.
On the surface, the Halloween party is the perfect excuse to chow down on Coach Kimel's homemade chicken chili and dress up in otherwise embarrassing costumes. However it is also a strong reminder of our team's core values, among which are tradition and family. The annual party has been around as long as our program. Over the years it has provided the perfect stage for current players, coaches and alumni to connect and share a common bond.
Typically November brings to mind three things: colder weather, more schoolwork and Howser (our legendary strength and conditioning coach). Lucky for us, the warm weather persists and our grey sweat suits have made few appearances (knock on wood). However, the next few weeks are all about conditioning and individual improvement. Although we can only practice for eight hours a week, November is never a breeze. A typical week involves three lifts, lateral or acceleration work, team conditioning and small group work with the coaches. In spite of our tired legs and a few extra ice baths, we would all agree that the outcome is worth the labor. The Blue Devils will be grinding for the next few weeks - wish us luck!
