WILMINGTON, N.C. – After hovering around the top three of the team leaderboard for most of the first round of the Landfall Tradition, the third-ranked Duke women's golf team dropped seven shots over the final four holes to close tied 12th at the 6,159-yard, par 72 Country Club of Landfall Dye Course in Wilmington, N.C.
Purdue took the opening day lead with a five-under-par, 283, while Wake Forest (286), Florida (288), UCF (289), Notre Dame (290), Alabama (290), Oklahoma State (290), North Carolina (292), Virginia (292), Tennessee (292), Ohio State (292), Duke (293), Arizona (293) and South Carolina (293) rounding out the top 12 teams.
The Blue Devils had a solid start and made the turn at two-over-par, led by freshman
Gurbani Singh's one-under, 35, to open the day. Duke had started well on the back nine and was one-under-par through 14 holes as a team, before the Blue Devils dropped seven shots over the final four holes to finish with a 293.
Freshman
Leona Maguire continued her hot start to open her collegiate career with an even-par, 72, and is tied 21st overall. Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, kicked off her day with five straight birdies before turning in a birdie on No. 6 and a bogey on No. 7. After making the turn at even par, she rolled in a birdie on the 360-yard, par four 10th hole, but for the second straight time backed it up with a bogey on the next hole. She carded her third birdie of the day on the 14th to move to one-under for the day, but closed the day with a bogey on No. 18. Maguire hit 16 greens, 14 fairways and had 33 putts on the day.
Maguire has now carded even or under par rounds in nine of 10 collegiate outings.
South Carolina's Nanna Madsen took the individual lead on day one with a six-under-par, 66, while UCF's Ashley Holder is second with a 67.
Playing in her second collegiate tournament, Singh posted a one-over, 73, Friday and is tied 28th overall. Singh, who hails from New Delhi, India, had Duke's best start of the day with three birdies over her first six holes. She opened with a par, bogey and par on the first three holes. Singh then collected three straight birdies on holes four through six to move to two-under-par.
Singh would bogey No. 8 on her way to making the turn at one-under-par, 35. Over her final six holes, Singh suffered three bogeys on her way to finish with a 73.
The trio of
Sandy Choi,
Celine Boutier and
Lisa Maguire each carded rounds of two-over, 74, and are tied for 36th overall.
Boutier, a native of Montrouge, France, held a one-under-par ledger through 14 holes, but had three straight bogeys on holes 15, 16 and 17 to finish with a 74. She hit 15 greens, 10 fairways and had 34 putts on the day.
Both Choi and
Lisa Maguire turned in one birdie, three bogeys and 14 pars Friday on their way to finishing with a 74. Maguire hit 11 greens, 12 fairways and had a team-best 28 putts, while Choi hit 14 greens, 14 fairways and had 33 putts.
Duke will tee off in the second round Saturday beginning at 10:09 a.m., on hole No. 10 along with Virginia and Ohio State.
