CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the second straight year and the 13th time in school history, the seventh-ranked Duke women's golf team claimed the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational Sunday as the Blue Devils carded a 54-hole total of two-under-par, 862, to win by two strokes at the 6,379-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
After trailing the first two days to South Carolina, who is coached by former Duke golfer and assistant coach
Kalen Anderson Harris, the Blue Devils fired a final round even-par, 288, on its way to finishing two shots ahead of the Gamecocks (864). Rounding out the top 10 teams were NC State (878), Wake Forest (880), Arkansas (882), Virginia (883), LSU (885), Oregon (887), Vanderbilt (888) and North Carolina (893).
“I was proud of the team,” said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. “Each of them contributed scores that counted toward the win. The course was playing long due to wet conditions.”
After round two had been suspended due to the weather Saturday, Duke closed the second round early Sunday morning with a one stroke lead over South Carolina. The final 18 holes started with a shotgun start shortly after concluding the second round.
“We did a great job coming out this morning to finish the second round,” added Brooks. “We took the lead, so, had round three rained out, we would have gotten the win by defaulting to round two position.”
Duke junior
Celine Boutier and freshman
Leona Maguire each concluded the weekend tied third overall with a two-under-par, 214. Virginia's Lauren Diaz-Yi registered the individual title with a seven-under-par, 209, while Vanderbilt's Kendall Martindale placed second with a 213.
Maguire, a native of Cavan, Ireland, carded a final round of 70 on her way to placing in the top five in her third consecutive tournament to open her career with rounds of 71, 73 and 70 for a total of 214. She kicked off her day with a par and then suffered a double-bogey on hole two. Maguire responded by playing her final 16 holes at four-under-par. She rolled in birdies on No. 3, No. 4, No. 13 and No. 16.
A product of Montrouge, France, Boutier posted rounds of 68, 72 and 74 over the three days to post a two-under-par, 214. She had a bogey on the 343-yard, par four second hole, but after a birdie on No. 7 Boutier got back to even par. The 2014 National Player of the Year closed her final 11 holes at two-over-par with bogeys on No. 8 and No. 12. Boutier led the tournament with 44 pars over the three days, including 18 during the second round.
After carding a team-best second round ledger of 69, sophomore
Sandy Choi notched a final round 74, on her way to placing tied 11th overall with a 217. Choi, who hails from Seoul, South Korea carded three birdies on the day as she hit 12 fairways, 12 greens and had 30 putts.
For the second straight round, freshman
Lisa Maguire collected an even-par, 72, on her way to placing tied 27th with a three-day ledger of 223. After posting bogeys on the second and fifth holes to open her final round, Maguire played her final 14 holes at two-under with birdies on No. 9, No. 13 and No. 14.
Rookie
Gurbani Singh concluded with a career-best even-par, 72, in her first collegiate tournament as she moved into a tie for 31st overall with a 224. With a team-best final round opening nine holes, Singh rolled in birdies on No. 4 and No. 6 to move to two-under-par. A bogey on the 374-yard, par four ninth, Singh made the turn at one-under-par. Singh, who is from New Delhi, India, had two straight bogeys to open the back nine, but settled down to play her final seven holes at one-under-par with a birdie on the 361-yard, par four 16th.
The win for Duke was Brooks' 120th career victory over his 31 years with the Blue Devils.
Duke will next travel to Wilmington, N.C., to compete in the Landfall Tradition, Oct. 24-26 at the Country Club of Landfall.
