Kelci Smesko and Maddy Action, who will both join the Duke program this fall, guided Team Freedom to a 3-0 ledger in pool play at the Showcase. The duo faced off against future teammates Emma Lazaroff and Jordan McCarthy in their first game of the day, with Smesko tallying four goals and Acton three in a 20-8 victory. Lazaroff and McCarthy each provided a goal for Liberty, while Lazaroff also added one assist.
Team Liberty bounced back later in the day behind the efforts of Lazaroff, who recorded a team-high four goals and two assists in a 20-17 win over Team Spirit. Lazaroff, a midfielder from Lafayette, Colo., has now totaled eight goals and four assists through two days of the Showcase.
Meanwhile, Acton and Smesko-led Freedom also earned a spot in Tuesday's final with a 14-13, come-from-behind victory over Team Pride. Acton and Smesko contributed two scores each as Freedom rallied from a 9-4 deficit to post the win.
Freedom and Pride will square off in Tuesday's championship game, which will be streamed live at 1 p.m. on ESPN3.com.
