The calls Abraham Kromah was hoping would come, didn't. Not on the weekend of the 2011 NFL Draft, not in the days after as teams snatched up prospects with training camp invites.
Kromah had worked out
for the Giants and Eagles after finishing as the ACC's second-leading
tackler during his senior season at Duke, but the chance to fight for a
roster spot in the NFL didn't come his way.
And this is the part
where a lot of guys would have taken that Duke University education and
left the helmet and pads behind, moved on to something else.
Abe Kromah wasn't ready for that. Instead he went back to work.
"I
did nothing but work out," said Kromah. "I had a lot of time to myself
and got prepared for whatever teams might come calling."
The one that did turned out to be a bit of a surprise.
It
wasn't the Giants or Eagles or another NFL franchise. The offer that
came Kromah's way back in January was from north of the border, the
Canadian Football League. Six months later the former Tottenville HS
standout is starting at linebacker as a rookie for the Saskatchewan
Roughriders.
