ATLANTA, Ga. -- Duke's drive to win its fourth consecutive ACC Tournament championship came to a halt on Saturday afternoon as third-seeded Florida State upended the second-seeded Blue Devils, 62-59, in the semifinal round.
“It hurts us to lose, but we lost right,” Duke head coach
Mike Krzyzewski said.
On the game's final play,
Seth Curry stole a long inbounds pass near midcourt and launched a 40-footer from the right sideline that drew iron but did not fall. The sequence came after
Austin Rivers misfired on a three-point attempt that would have tied the game with six seconds on the clock and Duke knocked the ball out of bounds under its own goal.
Rivers paced the Blue Devils with 17 points while Curry added 13.
Miles Plumlee chipped in nine points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.
The loss drops Duke to 27-6 on the year, and the Blue Devils will await the NCAA Tournament selection announcement on Sunday. Duke will be absent from the ACC Tournament championship contest for just the fourth time since 1997.
Despite committing 14 turnovers, the Blue Devils trailed by just two points, 33-31, at intermission.
Florida State built a 10-point advantage early in the second stanza, but
Quinn Cook came off the bench to spark Duke's return. He assisted on a
Josh Hairston transition lay-up at the 14-minute mark and, following a steal, converted his own conventional three-point play to make the score 43-38 in favor of the Seminoles with 13:28 on the clock.
Duke continued to cut into the lead over the eight-plus minutes, and finally pulled ahead for the first time since the six-minute mark of the first half when Curry sank two free throws for a 54-53 advantage with 5:03 remaining. With 3:39 left to play, Rivers scored and added a foul shot for a 57-55 Duke lead, but the Seminoles would receive a three-pointer from Michael Snear just 12 seconds later to claim the lead for good.
Facing the ACC's top defense to shoot against, Duke made just 37.3 (19-51) percent of its field goal attempts on the day and tallied a season-low 59 points on the afternoon. The Blue Devils sank just one-of-10 three-point attempts after halftime.
Fueled by a 16-point, six-assist effort from Snear, Florida State improved to 23-9 and will face top-seeded North Carolina in the title tilt Sunday afternoon.
