DURHAM, N.C. - The third-ranked Duke women's tennis team will open its 2012 dual-match season against the visiting William & Mary Tribe Friday, Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. This meeting will mark the second straight year the Blue Devils have hosted the Tribe in their first home match of the season.
Duke holds a 21-6 lead over William & Mary in the all-time series, including victories in three consecutive meetings. The Blue Devils finished last season with an overall record of 25-5, while the Tribe went 16-9 on its way to capturing the Colonial Athletic Association title. Duke reached the NCAA Quarterfinal Round before falling to UCLA, while William & Mary did not make it out of the first round.
The Blue Devils enter the 2012 season with six singles players and two doubles teams ranked in the first ITA poll. Freshman Beatrice Capra ranks No. 7, freshman Monica Turewicz No. 35, sophomore Hanna Mar No. 38, junior Mary Clayton No. 66, freshman Annie Mulholland No. 97 and sophomore Rachel Kahan No. 118. Capra and freshman Ester Goldfeld open the season ranked seventh in doubles, while Mulholland and Mar sit 46th in the spring's first rankings.
Head coach Jamie Ashworth, entering his 16th season at Duke, owns a career record of 338-80 (.809), and with 14 wins in 2012 will become the ACC's all-time winningest women's tennis coach. Kitty Harrison, who coached North Carolina for 21 seasons from 1977-1998, currently sits atop the ACC's all-time wins chart with a 351-224 (.610) career mark.
