DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke Department of Athletics will launch the Blue Devil Network featuring live and on demand video and audio content from its 26 varsity sports. Utilizing the school's official athletic website, GoDuke.com, to power the digital network, Blue Devil fans will be able to access content from a variety of connected devices, including desktop and laptop computers, mobile phones (iPhone and Droid apps are available), and the newly created iPad app. In the future, Duke Athletics plans on adding to its inventory of connected devices, thus creating one of the country's first college IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) network.
“Several months of dedicated planning led to this launch,” said
Kevin White, Duke vice president & director of athletics. “Our excitement about the ability to offer exclusive Duke content cannot be overstated. Certainly, our strong partnership with NeuLion helped make the technology possible. Even more exciting are the possibilities that lie ahead as we continue to add even more connected devices to the network. This strategy will provide Duke fans access to the content they want – anytime, anywhere.”
GoDuke.com “Inside Access” subscribers ($9.95 monthly / $29.95 for four months or an audio only yearly subscription / $79.95 annually) will have access to premium content, including exclusive condensed basketball and football games, live streaming of non-televised Duke sporting events (some in high definition), live radio calls of Duke Basketball and Football from the Blue Devil IMG Sports Network and live postgame press conferences from basketball and football. Additionally, Duke is focused on expanding the content on the Blue Devil Network in the future, specifically focused on postgame access, game analysis and exclusive features. Non-subscription offerings include news stories, photo galleries, interviews and video features from the 26 varsity sports, GoDuke Weekly (a video look at Duke Athletics), and specialty shows such as “Inside the Helmet,” a three-part series featuring the Duke Football program during preseason camp.
By offering the iPhone, Droid and iPad apps, Duke and NeuLion have penetrated 71.0 percent and 68.3 percent of the smart phone and tablet market shares, respectively, according to Nielsen & Comscore. While iPads account for 68.3 percent of tablet sales in the industry, they actually account for 97 percent of all tablet traffic, signifying a much higher usage rate than other tablets. As the breadth of consumer devices continues to expand and consumers viewing habits evolve, it is essential for departments of athletics to reach their fans in a fast and efficient manner on multiple devices.
“We believe that providing multiple access points for our fans around the world offers the best solution in the long run,” said
Jon Jackson, Duke associate director of athletics / media relations & public affairs. “Why limit Duke content to television or a computer? While both of those spaces are extremely important, there are emerging technologies and growth in others. The ultimate goal is to be in spaces many of our competitors are not. Since we are employed by one of the few truly global universities, the more ways we can deliver Duke content to connected devices around the world seems to be the most appropriate strategy.”
